Plastic Skid Plates!?

Am I the only one who was surprised to find plastic skid plates on my 60th Anniversary edition when I changed my oil.

All trims with the plastic bumper get plastic skids. For those trims that option the modular bumper, they got a steel bash plate from MY'21 - MY'23 Job1. After MY'23 Job2, those trims that normally have a standard plastic bumper even if they optioned the modular bumper still get a plastic skid plate that will looked very similar to the steel bash plate.

The 60th Anniv. Edition is a package based on the OBX which has the plastic bumpers standard. The 60th Anniv. Edition includes the capable bumper so it gets the plastic skid that looks like the standard steel bash plate that first started showing up MY'23 Job2.

The Black Diamond standalone trim and current Black Diamond package on the Big Bend gets full steel bash plates. The Badlands always has had full steel bash plates. The Stroppe (2 & 4 door) is based on the Badlands (it inherits the Badlands standard package which includes full steel bash plates). And the same applies to the Limited Heritage Editions.

They are sliders not bash plates. The FDU m190 pinion seal leak will lube them up nicely.

In my opinion there should be no plastic skid plates anywhere on the bronco and further more at the price we paid there should only be a steel version on every single bronco sold

It's not really that uncommon, and hasn't been for some time. Steel is heavy, plastic compounds are much lighter and will do the job for 90% of all users out there.

Heck my '99 GMC S-series Jimmy had a fiber-reinforced plastic skid plate protecting the trans and transfer case. It was pretty stout too - I wouldn't have tried jacking up the vehicle with it but it kept several logs off my t-case.

Steel or even aluminum will hold up better though.

For what it's worth, I added the metal SAS engine/transfer case skid plates to my big bend for dirt cheap. Bolts right up!

My '21 BB had plastic, pretty easy and not too expensive to add the factory steel skids. My '23 Explorer has felt skids, so there's that.

Dang, you've been paying attention!

And I didn't even want to add confusion in that the for MY'21-MY'23 Job1 always included a steel bash plate when optioning the modular bumper. There were a few MY'23 Job1 builds where they optioned the modular bumper but Ford snuck in a "faux" bash plate that was plastic but different than the standard plastic skid. It had a similar mold and granular texture to mimic powdercoat. Those that caught it had it rectified as a mis-build. But for MY'23 Job2, the steel was dropped with the "faux" bash plate taking it's place when the modular bumper was optioned and the standard options on the underlying trim was plastic bumpers.

This has carried through till present. Hence, the OP who has the 60th Anniv. Edition and a capable bumper still gets the "faux" bash plate as the underlying trim is an OBX with standard plastic bumpers/skid.

I have had plastic skit plates on my KTMs for years taking abuse, impacts and slides over terrain so brutal and rocks so sharp a Bronco would be scrap metal within 10 min if could ever begin to tackle the terrain.

I did lose several steel skid plates from sheared bolts though....

I personally love plastic underbody protection mainly because it flexes, never punctures, and slides well though, on a Bronco, once on the skid plates have much bigger things to worry about.

IMO the OE under armour is AHSS and the best one can get....

Ford knows 99% sold never scrape a rock. Why would Ford spend $1 more on each not to sell one more Bronco because they did. Then there is the higher trims for many dollars more that include metal skids. It’s all about money.
