We recently purchased a 24 OBX with the 2.7 and the death rattle started at 495 miles. Took it in and was told it’s a cam phaser issue and Ford is aware of the problem and parts were ordered to repair. It’s been in the shop all week and hopefully will be done by this afternoon. It is quite worrisome to have this occur on a brand new vehicle!

It certainly doesnt do anything for customer confidence... but its absolutely par for the course. Ford hasn't been able to engineer a v-motor cam phaser that will last as long as one should in over 2 decades.

Here is video / sound of the issue. Rattles maybe 5 seconds into idle from a cold start then continues on and off. Again this is just something that started maybe last week?

I don’t really hear any phaser rattle in that personally. But it’s also hard to tell from the video. You can google phaser rattle and compare it to millions of videos though to get an idea. It never really comes and goes like you’re explaining.

Right around second 16 it starts and then on and off until the end. I hope it’s a big nothing. After the other cam phaser videos I’ve seen I agree mine doesn’t sound quite like that!

Yeah all the cam phaser videos I've heard produce a very noticeable "rattling" the first few seconds after start up.
I did not think I heard that sound in your video, but did hear the other rattle sound later on as you mentioned.
I'll try to see if I hear something similar on mine after start up when I drive it around this weekend.
I'm not sure if you'd mentioned it, but I'd suggest driving around and low speeds with your windows down or doors off and see if it gets any worse with light acceleration at low RPM's.

Well folks, I went to the dealership today. I showed the service tech the video and he could hear the rattle. I saw them take it in back and saw see several technicians including the manager look at everything thoroughly. Reviewed ECM for codes, etc. Nothing found. They did say that there isn't anything to indicate a problem with the cam phaser either.

So, credit to them for not dismissing me right away. They spent maybe a good 45 minutes looking at every item under the car and in the engine. Bolts and fasteners were checked and tightened from what I could see.

I will just live with the occasional rattle I suppose.

Exhaust rattle, turbo wastegate rattle or both?
I’ve notice coming from a loud 4Runner, now in a braptor both these engines have loud/noise engines so I am kinda accustom to strange sounds coming from the engine area.

Honestly I am not sure. The sound in my situation at least is coming from the front end of the vehicle. Likely a wastegate rattle.

Well that is sort of discouraging....
Aside from putting the car up in the air and having someone sit in it and apply throttle while you are under it looking around...I'm not sure what else to do...

LOL - reminds me of one of those 'Just Rolled In' videos of a customer complaining about a similar rattle that is solved by tightening the oil filler cover.

Started hearing a rattle under the engine lately after start up. Seems to go away after driving but can hear it when letting off gas. No CEL or any change in vehicle performance. I researched on here and I’ve read everything from cam phasers to normal. Taking into the dealer on Saturday to see.

Anyone else experience this ?
My 23 started experiencing this last week and it is the cam phasers. They are replacing under warranty and I’m supposed to get my bronco back next week. Very frustrating but I’m glad they found the issue.
