Not sure what’s going on, but the backup cam screen today has decided to just go black. I have the direction lines, as well as the side and front cameras working.

This has happened before but then comes back next time I start the truck, today it’s done it twice.

Is this a software glitch, or is there an easy wire to check? It’s not flickering or anything, and it’s not dirt. And it’s def sparatic in nature when it does it.

Try rebooting the APIM by turning on the truck, and hold down radio power and forward seek buttons together until the touchscreen reboots. If you don't have a code scanner, message me the VIN and I can pull any codes it may be reporting as long as your Fordpass account is connected.

I’ll give it a try, but after I my kids hockey practice, I go back out and it works fine. 🤪

I have a pro cal scanner, will that scan the correct codes?

Yea, that should pull the active codes. If it comes and goes, it is most likely a loose connection on the camera itself or on the IPMA. If you see any lost comms or ethernet failure codes between the a camera and the IPMA and/or APIM, that is most likely the culprit unless the camera itself is crapping out which can happen, but that's rare.

ProCal scanner tends to only get engine codes. It doesn't seem to get any codes from the other modules.

I have not seen any error messages what so ever. It may not happen again for weeks. Im
Going to check the wiring behind the wheel.

Where’s the other connection to check out?

There's a connection from a harness to the camera itself behind the plastic cover in the tailgate (where a lot of folks put the mini-safes and what not) - it's wide open in there and easy to get that panel off. Third brakelight wiring harness is right next it and comes from the same harness. if you undo that, you can pull the spare carrier off. There's also a bit of wiring in there for rear lock/rear door open sensor.

Then another connection in the rear passenger side - you can see the canvas covered wiring going from the tailgate to the quarterpanel around the hinge, and there's another connection just inside that rear trim piece on the quarter panel. You don't have to pull the entire trim piece to get at it. You pop that connection and you can pull the entire tailgate off if you wanted to.

From there - I dunno though.

I'll also say - from time to time, Sync just flips out. I've seen mine go black on reverse on rare occasion too - but never through multiple starts in a row or anything consistent or excessive. I just attribute it to the crappy Sync 4 software that generally has issues with just about everything.

Have you checked to see if you're part of the camera recall?

So messing around some
More. I can start the truck. Press the camera button and it works, shoes 360° view.

Sometimes, when I shift into R. That’s what triggers it to go black.

I was able to go from 360 to R. Goes black, press the camera button again back to good view.

Wild. 😂. However that tells me I don’t have to connections in the rear, that’s a plus
