I choose to follow the body line in the back and avoid the Hinges. There also body line around the tails lights that acts like a guide

My thoughts exactly seeing that DC3. Amazing aircraft. What’s that in front of it?

If you're talking about the power cord hanging out of the hood, its likely an engine heater. As pilots we often use them to preheat our aircraft engines in cold envirnments, wouldn't doubt thats what it is, considering where he lives.
