I got my new air filter delivered today and wanted to put out a review as I’ve seen this topic going back and forth. Lid has 4 t30 screws that need to come out, and a plastic push pin on the front, and then comes right off.

First thing I did was inspected the stock air filter, and to my surprise, there was a decent amount of dust and dirt in it. My outer banks has roughly 4,000 miles on it. There was even some dirt in the bottom of the air box. The stock filter does a great job of filtering, but I also believe it’s limiting the air intake a decent amount. Install was super easy, no hose clamps or anything needed. It’s actually held into place by a piece of molded plastic in the bottom of the intake. You have to put in a good amount of force to get it in so it will sit flat.

once you do that, screw lid back on and done. I was able to take it out for a bit of a test and there is a pretty noticeable improvement to throttle response. I was actually quite surprised. Feels like it’s opened up a bit of response that was already there. The stock intake is actually a pretty good design, I really don’t think anything more than a drop in filter is necessary. Also, I wouldn’t use anything more than a dry filter. Cost me $70 for the filter and it was definitely worth it. I’m going to pair it with a whipple intercooler and a tune. All those paired should wake it up quite a bit.

I haven’t decided between the Ford performance tune or to go with whipple tune.

That OEM filter with wavy/deformed paper pleats looks like garbage

S&B looks like a much better made filter

it was definitely worth the cost. I also noticed I’m getting 1-2 mpg more. This could be complete coincidence. Nothing has changed in my route every morning, same driving style, same gas. It’s been hot as hell here in FL. I was getting around 19.8-20 before

These things suck in EVERYTHING. My original filter and then I switched to K&N... Not too pleased with the K&N so I might switch to one like OP posted. This was before I put a snorkel on the Bronco.

They both look to be in rough shape. I did a little search and see many companies have dry filters. Guess I'll have to do a deep dive. K&N is on my no list though.

Yeah, I am going back to a dry filter. I do like K&Ns cabin air filter though.

The one I have from S&B is a dry filter, they do have an oil one but I’m steering clear of them. Very happy with this one so far. That stock filter looks terrible though.

If you don’t plan on doing any major water foraging you can gain alittle mpg by removing the splash guard in the box. Saves you the $300-$600 for an aftermarket intake and still maintain your accessibility to change filters or service them without removing the whole box.

I never even noticed this or that it was removable. I’m pretty happy with what I’ve gained so far, if this is not going to hinder anything with the new filter I’ll probably just leave it. That’s good to know though.

Is it an easy take out and then replace when needed?

I have questions.....

How fast were you going through the mud hole to get that much sediment that high on your inner fender support?
What else have you had to replace? Alternator?
It looks like you had a lot of fun, can I come next time???

I'm not necessarily brand loyal to any one air filter company but I did buy a DRY AFE Power filter when it was on sale in July, about $70 I believe. 🤷‍♂️

I still have it sitting on my shelf, was waiting for 10k miles before replace it but after reading this, might do it sooner......I like the MPG improvement, aside from the throttle response as indicated from the OP.
