Bronco is still new to me. Updates are ready, I stalled them 2 times now. Scheduled it for 1:00 AM looks like the best time for me. What if I need it while its updating. Get in and drive it?
Will it start and drive? Whats the deal?
Thanks

Well you know it's updating overnight at 1 am... If you suspect you may need your vehicle, why not change the date for the update?

I never found them to be that long to download/install. If you're pulling a bank job or something where 10 minutes may make all the difference, you may want to defer...

I get all that, just wondering if it will start and run while updating.

I think it probably depends on the update. Specifically which module is being updated.
So, I set the auto update and schedule last night for recurring at 1:00AM
Truck is in the garage, this AM I checked and it did not update. Says its still scheduled. I had windows up etc but did not lock it. Should it be locked?
I also hit the update now button this AM and hope thats what its doing. What is the correct way to park it so it does it automatically?
Sorry to bother and thanks.
You must be a tech. I am a retired GM Parts Manager and I miss checking with the guys at work when I had a problem.

I don't think it needs to be locked. But there are a few things that would prevent it from updating even if you set a scheduled time, like battery state of charge for instance.

Just drove it about 200 miles yesterday, so it should be good. No lights, no DTC I can see. Windows up etc. Its only got 1700 miles. Guess I need to go to the dealer?

Send me your VIN and I'll see what your OTA dashboard shows just out of curiosity.

Definitely does not need to be locked

Usually if I put the battery maintainer on it, that will do it. One time it got hung up for a couple of weeks like you said, i adjusted the auto update time (think i took off Sat/Sun or something) and it updated next day - but that could have been coincidence. One time i saw my WiFi connection had been removed so i readded that and it updated next day.

I think as long as you got a fully charged battery and no stuck updates, then you are just waiting on Ford to push it to you. Wifi may let your Bronco ask and get an update as soon as its released for your VIN instead of waiting for it to get pushed over cell telematics but I don’t know if thats true

Thanks for that, I just called the Ford help and they tell me the secondary battery charge is not enough to run the update. I did just drive it 200 miles on Wednesday and its hard to believe that it ran down that fast. I am going to take it out for awhile and charge it up. Didnt know there is a secondary battery. Maybe its bad. Where is it? If I charge the main one will it also charge the secondary? Sorry for all the questions and thanks for the help. Dont want to take it to the dealer if I dont have to.

I have no idea what they meant by secondary battery lol
But it looks like the issue was indeed because of the battery state of charge:

I doubt it ran down - it probably just didn't get charged all the way up. Lots of small trips are harsh on these batteries, and it takes more than just one good trip to top them off. The BMS only will charge it to 80% or so, so doesn't take much for it to be underneath the threshold needed for OTA updates.

Those OTAM notes are very interesting, and revealing. Looks like each update has it's own "estimated" battery budget, so the State of Charge required in the battery could be different for various updates. And it also takes into account current battery temperature (I'm guessing that's Celsius, but could be F since it's winter). Fairly sophisticated - and maddening since it's not transparent about it at all.

Hmm, maybe the battery is junk. Will drive it some and see what happens. All else fails Ill take it to Ford. This computer BS is one reason I waited so long to get a new vehicle. Old school here, points and spark plugs. Thanks for the info and your time.

The thing is , I just put about 200 highway miles on it Wednesday. Should be fully charged I would think, no codes and the gauges all look good. Ill drive it for now and see what happens. I just dont want to get stranded with a junk battery. Thing only has about 1700 miles on it.
