Trying to pass the time with something other than wishful order speculation and talk of cup holder placement. This is a Bronco board so I expect the exercise is far from scientific and the data to be skewed quite a bit.

If you could go back in time 50 years, what “SUV” would you buy and why? This is not a poll because you have to state why.

It’s 1971 and your domestic choices listed from smallest to biggest are…
  1. Jeep CJ5 – It’s got a 81 inch wheel base. It’s small, cramped, and the “original”. Biggest engine is a 225 V6.
  2. Bronco – With a 94 inch wheel base it’s bigger than a CJ and smaller than a Scout. Biggest engine is a 302 V8.
  3. Scout 800B – It’s got a 100 inch wheel base. Ford saw enough in it to copy it’s styling. Biggest engine is a 266 V8.
  4. Scout II – It’s still got a 100 inch when base but with a bigger longer body. Biggest engine is a 304 V8.
  5. Chevy Blazer – It’s true full size with a 106 inch wheel base. Biggest engine is a 350 V8.
The Dodge Ram Charger and the Jeep Cherokee don’t exist yet. Yes, I left the Wagoneer and the Suburban off the list.

I pick the one that came with the Dana 20 transfer case.

Go.

Probably the CJ-5. I had a 1970 with the "Dauntless" 225 V6. Lots of good times with that rig. This photo is from a camping trip, just before heading up into the Rocky Mountains. You are correct, not a lot of room, but we always made it work. :)
