Trying to install the Weathertech flaps and step 1 is a failure already. The plastic screws for the inner fender liner just spin endlessly and don't do anything at all? What am I doing wrong here?

Do you mean removing factory screws? If so take a flat head screw driver and pry the screw out, they are not re-used anyway. You cannot put any pressure on them when unscrewing

Yes the factory screws. Do you mean they are stripped somehow already? Because I didn't put any pressure on them. They spin so easy that you can't even tell you are moving them.

Just installed mine Thursday. I feel your frustration! The plastic screws have what looks like a washer. I found I had to hold that washer still while gently unscrewing the screw. In some cases I also had to use a thin straight screwdriver to pry up the screw (not the washer). I actually just used a drill bit ( but not the drill) to screw it out - don’t apply pressure while unscrewing.

In the end, I actually pryed that screw all the way out. You will not reuse them anyway. If the screw pops out, screw it back in a quarter of the way and pull - the whole unit then pulls out.

Good luck! (And patience!)

You have to be very gentle when unscrewing...
Look at the first couple seconds linked here:

If you're not reusing them, use a flat blade to just pry the center screw out.

Ended up getting all of them except one which we popped off with a trim tool. That one just wouldn't start unthreading no matter what we tried. Makes more sense what's going on once you get them removed, but at first I was quite worried thinking the threads were stripping. Weathertech flaps seem solid once installed.

The Rokblokz flaps were a bit pricey, but a super easy and sturdy install. Their install video was awesome(on YouTube). They supply steel brackets and you reuse some beefy existing bolts to attach. Plus they are quickly removable for the trail with thumb screws. If your budget can handle it, and they are back in stock, this was a no-hassle option that I’d recommend.

I will say I'm not crazy with how they don't line up with the steps very well. Might try cutting a hole in them to get them to lay flat on the step. Anyone else done that?

Just follow the instructions?

Have a set of no-drill flaps from them on our '19 Ranger. They were a perfect fit and instructions were easy to follow.

The main thing that tripped me up was getting the stock inner fender fasteners to back out. One of them just would not catch and start to back out...had to pop it out with a trim tool.

I know the OP got it done but for others if you can get a trim tool or flat head screw driver under the base, that looks like a washer, and pull it out a little bit the threads on the plastic screw will catch and you can then back it out and then the insert will release and can be extracted.

Once you get the first one out completely take a look at how it works and it’ll make sense.

How did you get the crash bar bolts loose?

Lots of elbow grease. They were some of the tightest bolts I have encountered anywhere.
