16k miles in and received the first strike of a pebel from a Semi resulting in a chip that quickly escalted to a 9 inch crack. Current deductible is $50 but insurance (Erie) would likely increase by 12% as we don't have any prior claims. My question is, what options are others using outside of their insurance. Based on this information? I'll pay out of pocket as it doesn't make sense long-term from a financial end. However, are there insurance options outside of your insurance? My insurance doesn't offer glass insurance separately. My concern is, I pay out of pocket and out ~$900 and could easily receive another cracked windshield shortly after. I will plan to put a protective shield-advice here is also appreciated.

THANKS!

16k is pretty good. I’m on the 3rd one at 28k miles. My second one was new for exactly 7 days when it got hit and developed a 6” crack immediately. I think you’re on the right track…keep shopping for insurance. I have State Farm and can get a new windshield every 12 months, no deductible. Living in AZ.

So get the hood deflector and plastic windshield covering. I've got many rock dings, in spite of deflector...but no cracks. 28k miles.

Use your Insurance you paid for it. Don't claim glass more than once a year or they may drop you. Deflector helps with bugs but it's not moving rocks. Its about $600 for the Exoshield. I had one with that crack too and your SOL from insurance. It also needs to be replaced every 3 or 4 years. In AZ zero deductible on glass and I found a good shop that used factory glass.
