The defect: in affected vehicles, the lug nuts on the driver’s side wheels may have been improperly tightened.

The hazards: loose lug nuts may result in wheel detachment while driving, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this issue.

Components: lug nuts

Affected vehicles: select 2023 Ford Bronco SUVs produced at the Michigan Assembly plant from February 9th, 2023, to February 13th, 2023.

Number of vehicles affected: 992

The fix: dealers will inspect, and if necessary, retighten the lug nuts, free of charge. Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until the remedy is completed.

Owners should: wait for communications from Ford, which will begin on May 1st, 2023. The Ford reference number for this recall is 23S17.

Recall Reference Number: 23S17

The safety of you and your passengers is key to every vehicle we build. That is why we’ve issued a recall for some 2023 Bronco and Ranger vehicles.

Vehicles affected in this recall may have lug nuts on the driver’s side road wheels that are insufficiently tightened, resulting in a potential wheel detachment from the vehicle.

You can see if your vehicle is included by entering your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) here. If your vehicle is affected, do not drive your vehicle in its present condition. In the interim, should you have the desire and capability to do so, you can tighten all of the wheel lug nuts on the driver’s side of the vehicle to the technical specifications called out in your Owner’s Manual (Wheel Lug Nut Torque Specifications).

Even with the interim action, you will still need your local dealer to complete the repair. Your dealer will tow your vehicle to the dealership, or participating Ford dealers may provide Mobile Service or Ford Pickup & Delivery options.

Apparently the workers at the assembly plant aren't doing their Daily Error Proofing Checks . Bolt torquing machines are supposed to be checked and verified at least once a day.

I have a whole bunch of ignorant angry thoughts about this. I won't share those.

But why is the solution a tow truck instead of a tech with a torque wrench in a company vehicle?

Also, I wonder if Ford plans to inspect these for damage and cover anything visibly wrong with the wheel studs/lugs/damage to the wheel itself?

LOL- SORRY, I am too inept to tighten lug nuts. PLEASE, tow my vehicle 30 miles to the closest Ford dealership so you can check to see if my lug nuts are tight???????

The absurdity of this.....really makes it pretty comical.

Does anyone know what the correct torque number is off hand for sasquatch? Guess I need to find the online manual...
The Owners Manual says 100 ft lbs, spare to carrier 66 ft lbs.

I do not know for a fact, but I bet its around 100 ft/lbs. most wheels tend to be in the range.

The Owners Manual says 100 ft lbs, spare to carrier 66 ft lbs.
The spare tire torque spec is slightly interesting.
There have actually been 3 different torque specs listed in the workshop manual for it lol
Until recently it was listed at 42.
Now if you look up tailgate removal it shows 66.
But also, if you look up high mounted stop lamp removal, it says 98.
It seems as if they can't figure out what they want it to be at.

66 seems like the correct amount. 98 is far too high in my opinion.

Imagine having to make an appointment and then probably wait at least and 1.5hr for them to check and maybe tighten you wheel :censored:

It's because…

If your vehicle was one of the affected ones, and your lug nuts have been loosening over the last few days or weeks, the lugs and wheels may be damaged. Ford cannot afford to take the chance that you can simply tighten the lug nuts and everything is fine. They have to remove the wheels and inspect the lugs carefully first.
