Bpdittenber and I will be heading up to Uwharrie on Saturday, June 13th. We plan to run Rocky Mount Loop, Dutch John, Sawmill, Slab Pile, Daniel (backside), and maybe Dickey Bell. Dickey Bell will depend if we can get another person with good spotting experience.

The purpose of this trip is to conduct reconnaissance of those trails and find suitable dispersered camping sites for a large group.

We are planning a two day trip to Uwharrie in July. The goal is to run all trails during the two days, one night run (Wolfden or Lakeview), and to have a great time around the campfire. The trip will be family friendly and open to anyone who wants to go. You do not need to stay the whole time and can met us on the day of your choice. Details will be posted after the 6th in a separate thread for the trip.

If any one is up for Saturday, June 13th, let me know. We plan on meeting at the Eldorado o/a 1000.

Edit: These trails are considered moderate and difficult. Offroad experience preferred.

Hope to see you on the trails!

Pictures of the last meet up to generate interest, lol.

I would definitely be down for this but have committed to that Cloninger Ford poker run that day.
Good luck!

not sure what everyone is running but dickey bell is absolutely doable without a spotter, with lockers.

I may be down to head there on the 6th. I was out a week ago and there was certainly some mud. I was driving to pinehurst yesterday and went through what mustve been 3" of rain but that wasnt active when I went through the troy area.

We have changed the date to June 13th. The plan remains the same other that the date change.

@NC_Oak I'm glad to hear that about Dickey Bell. Most of us are in stock SAS Broncos (various trims).

Can anyone tell me what is the preferred way to run these trails?

Dutch John - east to west or west to east

Dickey Bell - north to south or south to north

This will help to determine the route.

I have run Dutch john and Dickey bell both ways, it doesn’t matter which direction you run them other than if you want to go up or down the tougher spot on Dickey Bell. Dutch John has the really tight wallowed out spot, but there is room to bypass it, it is tough to get up if it is really muddy for some vehicles.

If we have a group that is going to camp out the weekend of the 13th, I can head up Thursday afternoon or Friday morning to get a spot big enough for the number of campers.

dutch john has a trenched area that looks a little intimidating but is very passable, when descending it gets a little off camber and the steering rack needs to work. there is bypass tho if you go through the trees up the hill. Dutch John also has another rocky area that I hid tranny skid plate on but no harm. you can go around it but that is still a little rocky but not an issue if you pay attention.

Dicky bell is pretty easy the entire length but the jeep badge of honor "part" is a serious little hill climb. Ive done many times without a spotter. if you're descending, you need to exhibit some skill. an off camber section on the left path (while ascending) can get hairy for rookies. You can bypass the entire hill tho.

I prefer to go up dicky bell's hill, but you'll want lockers. dutch john it doesnt matter. In terms of order of the trails, it doesnt really matter. the gravel road in the center of the park can connect you with a lot. if you go past the shooting range you can start / warm up on an easier trail then hit dickey bell. Alternatively you can start on dutch john then take the gravel road down to diceky bell

Thank you for the feedback!

I have done all of the trails other than the three D's, which is a goal for this trip. I think I'm set on the following order.

Wolfden
Dutch John
Dickey Bell
Rocky Mount Loop
Daniel (backside)

We could add Slab Pile and Sawmill in between Dutch John and Dickey Bell.

@Deadpool392 I don't think we are going to camp out this trip. I do want to find a large camp site for a two day trip in July. Do you know some good ones?

I'm super excited for this trip.

Absolutely on the camping spots, there is a large group site right on Moccasin Creek rd, which is the main forestry road, and there a few others just up the road from that one that will easily fit smaller groups. There is also paid campsites available at arrowhead camp ground, which has electric hookups available and a bath house.

I have run all the trails up there over the years, the front side of Daniel I won’t do in the bronco because of width, same for the trench on Dutch John- already got the trail beauty marks there. I have a winch and always bring tools with me, I also have a compressor for airing back up and a tire repair kit.

Any idea when the July trip is going to be? I’m going to be traveling through there heading back to Maryland on Monday July 27th and hoping to squeeze in some trails.

Had some plans change and plan on joining you on the 13th. Breaking in new front and rear control arms. I can spot Dickie no problem.

@1979 I am not sure of the date range for the trip yet. If we set the date for the weekend of the 25 - 26, I could always stay another day.

I'm a 1 1/2 hour drive away from Uwharrie and could meet up with you on the 27th regardless. Just let me know what time you would want to meet up.
