So the Ford dealership just replaced two of the oem Goodyears on my Sasquatch Badlands and the tread pattern is different. They even look a little narrower. I had two newer OEM Goodyears that were put on a year ago. Figured I’d replace the two that still needed today and was shocked to see the difference. Of course the dealer called at 5:45 to say it was done. I paid and picked up my keys after hours.

Am I wrong to go back and demand the matching OEM Goodyears? Do they not make the original ones anymore? Are these a newer version?

Honestly if these are an updated version of the OEM Goodyears, I’m gonna get my money back and put on a set of Toyo’s or Nittos.

You should always have 4 matching tires on a 4x4. It's not good for the differentials and transfer case to run mismatched tires.

Tread depth/overall diameter differences are the biggest issue, but the differences you note are not good either (though won't cause the same issues as different OAD).

I would try to make the dealer match the tires, especially if it's a warranty thing. But even out of warranty, I can't imagine any competent tire shop just slapping 2 new mismatched tires on a vehicle like that.

How old/how much tread is left on the old tires? If you told them to put 2 brand new tires on a vehicle with 2 significantly worn tires, that's bad and you are way, way better off buying 4/5 new tires.

Fronts what I needed

What the Ford dealer installed and they are RT’s not the MT’s like what the spare and the fronts are. I mean there’s clearly a tread pattern difference and the tech was like hmm looks good enough lol.

I grabbed a manager at the Ford dealership and showed him. He’s like wow this is embarrassing and bring it back tomorrow, we’ll get it figured out.

Those are the newer version found on 25 and newer models. Better tire IMO
I agree, but my fronts M/T’s were like 80-90% new so just wanted to swap the two worn out ones that were at like 30% tread left. Dealer said this morning not his problem they are mine now. Best they would do is sell me three more so they all match at a discount. I agree the RT’s a re a better tire in ride and noise but wanted to keep that aggressive look.
I told the dealer if I was going to buy a complete set I would have hands down went with Toyo or Nitto.

Well, I'd definitely be getting tires from somewhere else! The GY's should be pretty cheap though, what was the offer for three? These bigass tires are expensive when you're talking Nitto's (not sure about Toyo). My neighbor spent $2600 for five 35" Nitto Ridge Grapplers on his wife's Jeep last year.

The manager was out till Monday, so never would give me a price. They said was kinda my fault for not saying MTs. I’m not upset I told him, just want to make it right somehow. Don’t want to drive around on miss matched tires.

Blame the customer? That's some CYA crap. I'd definitely say something to the service manager. They aren't blind (I assume?) and should be able to go, "the customer didn't specify different tires so I should ask first". What a wad of bologna. Hopefully you've got better options elsewhere.

What you could do is get some poster board and put something like "If you see mismatched tires on my Bronco, know Jackass Ford is responsible!!" (only the real dealership name), tape it on your back windows, and then go up there to talk about it. Make sure the manager goes out to check it out. "Oh that, oh yeah, I was driving around town all weekend."

Stealerships gunna stealership. No matter what happens going forward, don't give that shady stealsership even another cent. Go to tire shop -- they aren't perfect either but at least have well trained/practiced tires techs and, in my experience, are incentivized more to make things right with the customer since there is actual competition in that market.

That’s definitely not right. If your vehicle came with the MTs, they should have put MTs on the 2 you bought. If for some reason they couldn’t get the MTs they should have let you know and gave you the choice. I would for sure be talking to service manager and or General manager.

You'll be fine to run the two new tires as long as they are both either front or back. I often just change 2 at a time because of money. I also rotate as often as I can for even wear.

"Generally, the tread depth across all four tires should be within 2/32 to 4/32 of an inch" this is all that matters when getting new tires for a 4x4

https://www.tirerack.com/upgrade-ga...-an-allwheel-drive-or-fourwheel-drive-vehicle

There's also this advice from https://www.dunntire.com/industry-best-practices

This is most important:
"4WD and AWD vehicles require special attention to insure that all four tires are closely matched in diameter to avoid strain and possible damage to the vehicle's differentials and/or viscous couplings. "

I dont agree with this part
"All tire positions on a 4WD vehicle must have the same brand name, model, tire tread pattern and performance rating."

That dealership is incompetent and doesn't care if they screw over a customer. They'd never see another cent from me.

In addition to MT and RT versions, my tire guy said there are also Ford and GM versions of the MT which have different tread patterns. He said they had accidentally ordered the GM version for a Bronco once and had to send them back and reorder.
