We wanted mini trucks for mini prices. A Slate for Maverick money and less specs and service is hard.

I have a Slate reservation but am not sure i'll build it/order.

The Telo looks like the cute 1962 Ford Econoline, but I am afraid that company will Canoo without the Bezos bucks Slate has.

I had an ex telephone econoline van back in my college days…great for my use at the time but it was a wreak…oil soaked clutch would slip over 60mph and it would foul a plug about every couple hundred miles…

Personally, I think it is really close to a great idea. The price it still too high for what it is, but as a cheap knock around short distance car it is compelling. If I didn't already have my baby car too, I would seriously consider it.

Ford's Ranchero EV might scratch the same itch and be at a service shop we already know from our Bronco's. A little truck to save our Broncs for the fun miles. I like the DIY interchangeable parts on this Slate though, pickup to fast back. The PPE plastic dumpster doors and bed (a la GM Saturn) and only able to wrap it makes me wonder how it will hold up.

Don’t know if this was already mentioned, but the Nissan Pulsar NX from 1987 had the modular body thing down. One car was a coupe, hatchback, convertible or pick up.

My local dealer is selling 2026 Mavericks - 4 door, paint(!), AC, power windows, nav, sound system etc for $26,500.
This is the hybrid model that gets 42mpgs.

A Slate specced similarly (but will still be much smaller) will be about $10k more. And will only have a 200 mile range.

Yeah, I just don’t know who this appeals to for non-fleet use at this price point, other than someone dead set on a fully electric pickup who can’t afford a Rivian.

I can see my city using them for their maintenance fleet as they just drive around town. But I do not see a reason why vs a Maverick unless they were told to find an EV solution.

I've had 2 Saturns, the SL and the Vue. I can tell you the doors did great with direct impacts and anything indirectly would make sharp dugouts into the plastic. I repair a hole in the Vue's door with a hot glue gun and a red sharpy (it was a red Vue).

I really loved the Vue, it did super well in the snowy mountains.

So a base, absolutely no options FWD XL (100A) 2.0L EcoBoost is MSRP: $29,685. Same build but with the XL (101A) 2.5L Hybrid AWD goes up $32,905. The 2.0L in the XL and AWD is not offered.

A no extra options Tremor AWD 2.0L Tremor is: $43,680.

A mid-range XLT (301A) AWD 2.5L hybrid is $35,405 and for the 2.0L AWD it is $33,185. The same model as a FWD is $32,185 and with the hybrid FWD is also $33,185. [As a note the same Ranger XLT (300A) 4WD 2.3L EcoBoost is $41,665 and F150 XLT Base (300A) 4WD 2.7L EcoBoost is $53,655]

A Lariat (501A) AWD 2.5L Hybrid is $40,630. Same but with the 2.0L EcoBoost is $38,410. FWD is not an option.

A blank Slate with a partial wrap and switched is $25,289.98.

FOR ME: the base model of each is very comparable. The cheapest Maverick will arguably be a better fit for most folks, but not all. Like I said I like the idea of the Slate, it is just not quite there yet. But we also see the Maverick skyrockets in price pretty quickly and Ford keeps some options locked to certain trims and option trees. Making the value proposition of the higher trims pretty hard to justify or understand. And yes, I did mainly AWD and 4WD models as that is what I would get.
