What Made You Fall in Love With Off-Roading?

Dad loved to drive and explore. He started doing it around St Elmo in the 1950s after returning from Korea. After marrying Mom in 1960, she loved the trout fishing there. Explore and fish. My first trip was in 1968 at age 5. Dad had a CJ3 and family vacations with aunts, uncles and cousins became the summer norm. Then he graduated to a 1968 Bronco. Not one specific moment but more of a lifestyle. Wheeling and fishing, great times.

I had always liked the Blazer (and my second ride was an 86 Ram Charger), but one day in 99(?) my friend picked me up in his Dad's 97 (or was it a 08?) Bronco and I was like, OOOH me like this! It was really nice, like one of the last ones they made (his dad was a VIP kinda dude). And of course that was the last year they made them... for 24 years, that is.

Darn my Cousin and his '71 Bronco taking me out on trails back in the 70's in the LA basin.

About 20 years back he ran an old trail he had not been on in a while. Tootling along came around a bend and right out onto a Green of a golf course. Came to a slow stop and slowly backed off the green. I had suggested should have gotten out and taken a picture of his "hole in one" but he was too afraid a grounds keeper might have had a serious issue. He also wondered why they had not put up any barricades on the trail.

What got you into off-roading?

My uncle had a '66 Bronco that he bounced me and my cousins around the southern NM desert, in the early 1970s.

Older sister had 2 Jeeps. Interesting, but not stimulating. Every Jeep rental I had was uninspiring. They got me placed in the desert Southwest or volcanic areas of Hawaiian Islands. Transportation, but never a thought of ever owning one.

My Mercedes was totaled by a wreck less driver. After multiple Mustangs, Mercedes, and a Corvette ... I wanted something different. So, I used the accident lawsuit monies to fulfill my boyhood urge (now as a senior citizeb) to buy my '25 squatched 2.7L HE Bronco.

Took Ford up on their offer to attend OffRoadeo in 'Vegas.

Hooked. Amazing vehicle WRT technology and capability.

Ha!! As a Young Midwestern Pup, sitting on floor watching B&W TV. I enjoyed Roy Roger's side kick Pat driving NellyBelle... that led to the Rat Patrol and all the War shows with Jeeps. The Jeep was the driving force in all these shows. Grew up wanting a Jeep... first rig was a new '74 CJ4 w 258 six. Later swapped it out for the 304 V8.

Later in Army, the adventures we had in various off-road rigs added to the off-road desires. In private life... off the grid camping and adventures added to the off-roading. Years later found Moab and that was an adventure and beautiful.

The BRaptor is a great vehicle... a pure joy to drive. It has a few negatives but positives greatly outweigh. This is a keeper for years to come.

My parents loved exploring the backroads and mild trails of Colorado in their '68 Econoline van (shockingly capable off road) looking for good camping spots from as far back as I can remember.
After an early stint when I was 16 in an inherited Ford LTD, I upgraded to an '85 Civic wagon with 4x4 and a granny gear (yes, you read that right) and spent my late teens pushing the limits of what it could do on the mountain jeep trails and learned a LOT on how important tire placement and picking the proper line are, a lesson my buddies with Jeeps and early Bronco's didn't need to pay as much attention to as me in my Civic.
Sold the Honda for an '85 Toyota P/U and was hooked from then on, exploring most trails in Colorado through my 20's and never owned a "car" again. Thus began a long string of Toyotas and Jeeps before landing in my current Bronco.
Of course, now I'm no longer in Colorado so my off roading options are far more limited, but I do what I can, it helps having a driveway that resembles a mild 4x4 trail

I used to trail ride on my MT Bike before I hurt my knees. Trail driving is a lot like that, picking lines, going where we need to get to. I love it.

Exactly! Great thoughts. I did marathoning, trail running, mtn biking too ... before age/reality reeled my @$$ in about age 52. So, yeah, at 66 now, the Bronco is my best simulation to still get me to fun places and keep the pulse moving these days.

I don't love offroading, but it's a necessary evil to get to where I want to go hunting/fishing/camping and get to my remote property in MT.

Pro tip: If your "line of business" necessitates it, check out the trunk space in a '59 Chevy Impala. Very impressive.
