Nypost doing it's usual hack job. The regs basically only apply to summer highway tires.

Key details regarding the exemptions include:

  • Snow Tires: Tires defined as "winter-type snow tires" or those certified with the Three Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF) symbol are fully exempt from the energy performance standards.
  • All-Weather Tires: Tires meeting the specific definition of all-season winter performance tires (typically 3PMSF rated) are also exempt, though they will be tracked by the state for potential future regulation.
  • Competition Tires: Motorsports tires with a treadwear rating of 200 or lower are exempt.
  • Other Exemptions: The rules also exempt off-road tires (typically 34.5+ inches or load index 122+), motorcycle tires, spare tires, and low-volume tires (under 15,000 units annually).

Not a surprise, NYPost is a headline-grabber that leaves a LOT of details out just to stir up controversy.

Frankly we need to get back to news reporting that reports ALL the facts, not just what grabs headlines. But there's no money in that.

Since when have regulations not increased once enacted?

The source you quote even tells us straight out that such will be the case.

One line states that 3 Peak tires are exempt. Yet in the very next sentence goes on to state that 3 Peak tires are going to be tracked for possible addition to the regs.

Off road tires are only exempt in sizes 34.5" or larger (our Bronco tires are 34.4"). So tire manufacturers WILL have to either develop two types of off-road tires so the much more common smaller sizes meet the regulations OR they will simply change the formulations on ALL the sizes. In either case you can fully expect the costs involved to be spread across the entire line of their tires.

You can also expect that there will be no CA only tires as the manufacturers will make it easy on themselves by switching their entire line to the CA standards

Just as vehicle manufacturers went from vehicles with a specific CA smog version with a 49 state smog version for the rest of the country, to simply building their entire lines to meet CA smog.

If they have to have less rolling resistance, then they will be made with less material, and not last as long.
That is something the tire manufacturers and others fighting the new reg have pointed out.

The state spokesperson crowed about the new regs saving CA drivers $79 a year in gas costs while ignoring them having to spend way more then that for the new tires.

have to wonder how much studying went into side friction resistance impact and how many roadway standards will need to be adjusted to account for that. As A highway engineer, all I see here is the possibility for a vehicle to need more superelevation on the roadway to account for the lower resistance. I will admit there is some level of "vagueness" in the standards, but if I slide of the road after being forced to use these tires, I know who I'm calling if I survive.

Until it's a problem, it's not a problem.

I can't run m50x15 slicks due to laws and
You'll not run some arbitrary brand sold through full page ads in magazines.
Thompson vs mtr vs at4 vs toyo... arguments for arguments sake.
Tire makers will adapt, You'll adapt.

This too shall pass.

Just like gas can manufacturers "adapted"? Giving us cans that are basically useless for their intended purpose.

You wish.

How about from KTLA5 in SoCal

I like to see who owns the media that I ingest. Apparently KTLA is owned by NexStar Media and the NY Post is owned by News Corp, aka Fox News.

You might remember NexStar Media as one of the groups that decided to temporarily remove Jimmy Kimmel from the air after making comments about someone's death that they didn't like. This may give you an idea of their political leanings.

Also, "KTLA's digital news platform frequently publishes and syndicates regional content involving the New York Post, such as when the New York Post expanded its digital footprint and launched a localized California initiative."

So I am not sure that using KTLA as a second source for a NY Post article is ideal since KTLA syndicates NY Post content.

It amazes me how so many people point out all the problems with CA. Every state has problems, some address them and some don't. CA addressed smog because it was so bad especially in SoCal in the LA basin. That initiated the CA auto emissions requirements. That did eventually end up being used nation wide. That has helped reduce smog in CA as well as many cities with that problem. I don't know about everybody else, but I like breathing cleaner air and don't mind the cost to have it.

I suppose CA should have been blamed for creating smog.

I am not native Californian, but have been here since 1969 and don't see any reason to leave. There are things I don't like about it but more that I do like. Why move to another place that also has things that I don't like. To each his own.

Do I want low rolling resistance tires? No, but I will adapt if need be and leave being concerned to bigger issues.

A lot of hype over a nothing-burger. It won’t affect us Bronco owners, so don’t lose any sleep over this.
It may affect a minority of Bronco owners, but they’ll be the ones we make fun of on this forum anyway.

So pointing out that the news report you used to confirm the NY Post is based on the NY Post is somehow makes me a conspiracy theorist ?

I guess the critical thinking skills that I learned in the liberal bastion of Texas have clouded my mind.

You add a Schrader valve.

A real Jerry can is formidable monster of a can.

My modern cans are are great once you add a vent.
Auto shut off
Auto close with no drip.
Great handles
See through enough to tell fuel level.

Signed,
I know what
USMC generally means
And what
20L Designates.

ps
Lawsuits far more than govt intervention are the reason for gas can evolution.

I get your point. I agree the smog laws were good. I remember not being able to see the San Gabriel Mountains from the pier in Long Beach because of the smog.

But there are times when CA seems to lose a sense of perspective. I'm thinking about Proposition 65 and how it's enforced. At first it was a "lawyer enrichment act" then it was modified. But Prop 65 warnings have become a joke in many situations.
