Coming from a Toyota Tundra with 5.7l motor. On Toyota cold starts you can hear the emission valves and the engine is slightly rough until the high idle kicks off and the valves close.

Starting the 2.7 the other day which sits in the garage, it almost sounds like a Diesel motor at first an smooths out about it warms up.

This is my first twin turbo motor so asking if this is normal.

Iā€™m not 100% sure about this engine but on my previous q50 with the twin turbo 3.0 on cold start up the wastegates would stay open to heat the converters up. Iā€™m assuming this motor is doing something similar.

Most important thing to do for turbo motors is to let them warm up. Impacts the turbo lubricant.

Yep. You don't need to let the motor idle for any length of time but definitely take it easy on the gas the first few miles.

Obviously different in displacement/cylinders but the 1.6 ecoboost in my ā€˜13 Fusion would do the same thing.

I have been having issues during cold(40-50F) mornings. Feels like it takes forever to crank over then sounds a bit rough for a few seconds. Hopefully this is what yā€™all are describing. 2.7 1500 miles

My 3.5 Raptor sounded like a sewing machine on cold morning starts. Havenā€™t noticed it on the 2.7 yet, but thatā€™s because I start it with my phone 10 min before I go outside. It was 4 degrees here this am

The synthetic blend oil that Ford uses could also be a culprit.
I'm a Mobile 1 guy when I do my own oil changes...
I once used Quaker State and the rattling/sewing machine noise was horrible! Even when fully warmed up, it was noticeably.
Doesn't help with manufacturers using 0W20's for fuel efficiency

I have a basequatch and a First edition with 2.7 in both. My fe makes all kinds of noise compared to my Base. The only difference is Fe has a hood liner and I think that changes the way it sounds. I opened hood on both and they seem to sound the same when open. šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļøšŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

Tried doing that engine prime before you start, and then when it starts see if the sound is there.

If it's due to oil pressure, priming the engine first will eliminate the odd sound. If the sounds are still there, then maybe it is related to engine warm up.
