Getting a Squatched BL and I'm thinking, 16" wheels with the 35s would give less weight/rotational mass and more sidewall for better starts/stops and off roading vs 17" wheels right? I mean, they won't look quite as cool as 17"-20" wheels, but I'm a function over form kind of guy.
I like the Method Beadlock tech and they look great.
Looking for affirmation and/or constructive criticism.

Nothing wrong with 16s. I'd look up the weights in both sizes of the specific wheels and tires you're interested in and see if there's really much of a difference. I have 17s and 35s and my tires are nearly 3x heavier than my wheels, an inch wouldn't change that very much.

Thanks, good to know. If close in weight, pros/cons to more or less sidewall?

The location of the mass matters with the mass of the tire(further from the center of the hub) mattering more than the mass of the wheel. Going with a lighter tire will make for less rotational mass where it really matters. Of course some of the lighter tires have weaker sidewalls that are less ideal off road.

15" wheels use to be the standard off road and definitely help when running low tire pressure with allow the sidewalls to bulge. Zero draw backs for me running a smaller wheel offroad other than tire manufacturers don't make a lot of large tires that fit.

I bought 17s this time just because of tire selection. 16s limit you as most of the new tire designs are not manufactured in those sizes (35 & 37).

My same setup in 16x9 wheels and 315/75/16 tires was at least $100 cheaper per wheel & tire. So I understand the temptation and benefit of the smaller wheel.

Will 16" wheels clear the brake components?

And as noted above, tire choice and availability will be greater with 17" wheels.

An extra 1/2" sidewall between 35" tire on 16" vs 17" wheels will not be noticeable in function, but looks are equally important in tire and wheel selection! (y)
