Anyone else experience phantom message alerts?

It started toward the end of last year where I have a "1" pop up on my message icon in the upper right corner. I tried clearing cache, re-logging in, different browsers, different computers/phones with no luck on getting that sucker to go away. Well today it went up to "2" LOL.

Any ideas as this is jacking with my OCD on notifications?

edit: not sure why it got moved to tech section because this is directed towards the notifications on this site

Sometimes. Other times it goes away for a while.
Apparently I also have 3 FB messenger messages I haven’t been able to find for the last 18 months or so as well.
I hope it wasn’t anything time sensitive…like a final plea for help from a stranded stranger or damsel in distress.
