I think the issue is the pivot point on the swing bar actually, regardless of which bike rack. Kuat does offer it in either a passenger or driver orientation.

If I'm missing something please elaborate.
I think we are just not quite on the same wavelength... No biggie.

From the pictures linked prior in the thread (this). It looks pretty clear that the Kuat part of a complete rack system (i.e. just the 2 bars with 2 hitch adapters and a big pivot) can mount and clear all parts of the vehicle whether the pivot is on the left or right. However, once you add the separate actual bike trays (1Up, QuickRStuff, etc.) then you may not be able to get full vehicle door swing/opening unless the Kuat pivot is left and the bike/bike rack swings left (again exactly as shown in pictures in link above).

Pics of said setup? I have been considering the Kuat V2 for my Thule rack but was concerned about clearances. I presume it also blocks the parking sensors.

Also seems like if you want to fully open the tailgate and have a slide floor, etc you need the version that swings out towards the drivers side NOT the passenger side

Thanks

Yes, but due to the bike rack itself, not the Kuat swing bar.
The kuat pivot V2 swings out to 120-degrees.

So even with the passenger side, you can extend it all the way and the slide out floor will come out all the way.

Is the concern not that the bike carrier and/or bikes tires will contact the vehicle before the Kuat can reach maximum swing? Any reason why a person would NOT want the driver side swing aside from maybe a little more walking to get around either end of the rig when both the swing and the gate are open? My big XL sized bike frames and 29" tires make it a wide platform hanging off the back.

I have the 4-bike Lolo Rack.
Really high off the ground and super easy to mount four bikes. Love it!

Beauty @FellowM3 . You (maybe) forgot to include a picture with the Kuat open and with Kuat and rear door open.

About to finally pull the trigger on a Kuat Pivot V2. @FellowM3 and @Obiwan did you consider both the driver and passenger side pivot and what were your reasons for going with the one you chose? @FellowM3 , can you fully open the gate with spar and with bike on the Kuat+QUIKR?

I don’t have that bike rack but use a similar one with the Kuat passenger side pivot. I went with that direction so I could fully open both the pivot arm and the door and have open access to the cargo area. Otherwise, you’ll be having to walk around the bike rack if walking around the driver’s side. Also, I’m pretty sure the driver side pivot arm blocks the license plate.

In the picture below, the arm is fully extended to 120 degrees, and the tailgate is open to 90, but there’s still room to open it further to its max angle, I just didn't take a picture of it.

Thanks, solid advice. To be clear, even with bikes mounted, the door limiter stops the door before the tire or gate hits the bikes/racks/Pivot?

I want to say it opens all the way to the stop before hitting the rack, but it’s probably dependent on your specific rack. In any case, it’ll probably be your spare tire that touches the rack/bicycle first, so I don’t think it’s too big of a deal.

I decided to throw my rack and bike on and test the limits: I have a passenger side swinging Kuat Pivot 2.0, a NV 2.0 and Specialized Turbo Levo size S5 for demo purposes.

as you can see, you can swing the pivot to 90 and 120 degrees AND lean out the NV rack. The only contact I could make was with tailgate and pivot at 120 degrees and the rack fully upright. The rear tire of my bike barely touched the passenger rear fender flare. When I tilted the NV out, there was no contact. A smaller bike would probably not make contact either.

im sure the same would be true with Drivers side pivot, but I wanted everything to one side and the tailgate never makes contact with anything in any configuration.
