Hello,
I wanted to share a recently resolved issue in case it’s helpful to others. I reviewed similar discussions here regarding Broncos not starting, but none matched the situation I encountered.
Vehicle Details:
2022 Bronco Badlands Sasquatch (2 Door, 2.7L Auto)
Mileage: 40,887
After driving the vehicle on Saturday, it remained parked in my shop until Wednesday. When I attempted to start it, there was no power at all. The battery measured 3.2 VDC, despite being only four months old. After charging it to 12.2 VDC, the vehicle powered on, but pressing the start button produced no response—no click or error message, similar to when the brake is not engaged.
I initially suspected a weak battery and replaced it under warranty, but the issue persisted. I then worked through several potential causes, including the brake safety switch, gear shift safety, key fob (including backup placement), and all fuses—none resolved the problem. I also connected a scan tool, which reported no issues.
At that point, I had the vehicle towed to a Ford dealer. After several days and consultation with their technical support team, they identified the issue.
Resolution:
The dealer retrieved DTC code U1023, which my scan tool did not detect. The root cause was an incomplete system update attempt. Due to limited connectivity in my shop, the update could not complete, leaving the vehicle in a no-start condition. The system repeatedly attempted the update, ultimately draining the battery. A reset and manual update resolved the issue. Word for word comments from the Ford work order below. As they say, technology is great, until it isn't. Thanks to the Ford dealer who got me back into action and not charging me a dime.
I hope this information is useful to anyone who may encounter a similar situation. I have turned off the automatic update to prevent this from possibly happening in the future.
Thank you and keep Wheelin!
CUSTOMER INSTALLED BATTERY AMD WOULD NOT START. FOUND DTC U1023 IN BCM. ATTEMPTED TO PERFORM OTA RESET WITH FDRS BUT WAS NOT SUCCESSFULL. DISCUSSED WITH HOTLINE THE ISSUE AT HAND AND WAS TOLD TO TEST THE NEW BATTERY THE CUSTOMER INSTALLED. CHARGED AND RETESTED AFTER A 50 MINUTE CHARGE AND BATTERY PASSED. RESET SOC AND WAS NOW AT 100% SOC. ALL DOORS WERE CLOSED AND STILL COULD NOT COMPLETE OTA RESET. FOUND THAT TECH DID NOT HAVE SECURTIY ACCESS TO PERFORM RESET. GAINED ACCESS BY GENERAL MANAGER AND REBOOTED PC, LOGGED OUT AND BACK INTO FDRS AND PROCEDURE WAS SUCCESSFUL. CLEARED ALL CODES AND VEHICLE STARTS AT THIS TIME.
