Hello,

I wanted to share a recently resolved issue in case it’s helpful to others. I reviewed similar discussions here regarding Broncos not starting, but none matched the situation I encountered.

Vehicle Details:
2022 Bronco Badlands Sasquatch (2 Door, 2.7L Auto)
Mileage: 40,887

After driving the vehicle on Saturday, it remained parked in my shop until Wednesday. When I attempted to start it, there was no power at all. The battery measured 3.2 VDC, despite being only four months old. After charging it to 12.2 VDC, the vehicle powered on, but pressing the start button produced no response—no click or error message, similar to when the brake is not engaged.

I initially suspected a weak battery and replaced it under warranty, but the issue persisted. I then worked through several potential causes, including the brake safety switch, gear shift safety, key fob (including backup placement), and all fuses—none resolved the problem. I also connected a scan tool, which reported no issues.

At that point, I had the vehicle towed to a Ford dealer. After several days and consultation with their technical support team, they identified the issue.

Resolution:
The dealer retrieved DTC code U1023, which my scan tool did not detect. The root cause was an incomplete system update attempt. Due to limited connectivity in my shop, the update could not complete, leaving the vehicle in a no-start condition. The system repeatedly attempted the update, ultimately draining the battery. A reset and manual update resolved the issue. Word for word comments from the Ford work order below. As they say, technology is great, until it isn't. Thanks to the Ford dealer who got me back into action and not charging me a dime.

I hope this information is useful to anyone who may encounter a similar situation. I have turned off the automatic update to prevent this from possibly happening in the future.

Thank you and keep Wheelin!

CUSTOMER INSTALLED BATTERY AMD WOULD NOT START. FOUND DTC U1023 IN BCM. ATTEMPTED TO PERFORM OTA RESET WITH FDRS BUT WAS NOT SUCCESSFULL. DISCUSSED WITH HOTLINE THE ISSUE AT HAND AND WAS TOLD TO TEST THE NEW BATTERY THE CUSTOMER INSTALLED. CHARGED AND RETESTED AFTER A 50 MINUTE CHARGE AND BATTERY PASSED. RESET SOC AND WAS NOW AT 100% SOC. ALL DOORS WERE CLOSED AND STILL COULD NOT COMPLETE OTA RESET. FOUND THAT TECH DID NOT HAVE SECURTIY ACCESS TO PERFORM RESET. GAINED ACCESS BY GENERAL MANAGER AND REBOOTED PC, LOGGED OUT AND BACK INTO FDRS AND PROCEDURE WAS SUCCESSFUL. CLEARED ALL CODES AND VEHICLE STARTS AT THIS TIME.

How did you replace the battery under warranty? I assume it's a replacement battery, was it replaced without testing, or was it tested and found to be faulty? That sounds like a very good battery warranty, I'd like to know for future reference.
Thanks for the post about the automatic updates, I'm about to park my bronco in the garage for a few months. I'll be sure to turn off the auto updates even though I'll have a battery tender on it.

It was a replacement battery I installed 4 months prior. It is a diehard battery with a 48 month warranty and when I took it into the parts dealer I explained I tried charging it but was unsuccessful and they provided me a new battery that now has a 44 month warranty. Honestly I do not think the battery was an issue and was drained due to the update trying over and over. I just wanted to rule out all the easy stuff before needing to tow it to the dealer.

That's good service. I didn't know Die Hards were still around, where did you buy it?

Often if a battery gets fully drained like that, it can damage or kill the battery. Especially if it's been left like that for some time.

I think most modern vehicles have a relay that disconnects the battery if the voltage drops to 10 or so to prevent complete drainage of the battery.

I did not reset the BCM when I installed the new battery back in December nor did I when I installed the new battery during this issue.

Undecided
Based on the "OTA reset" procedure they are describing, it sounds like the vehicle got stuck in inhibit mode during the OTA install. It's very rare, but it happens. I wish FORScan would add a service procedure that allow owners to do this themselves.
