I understand that a VIN is issued once all parts are secured. Is it possible that an order is built and being held in the corral (awaiting a chip or hardtop) without receiving a VIN?

I guess it would be possible. Chips and hardtops would be parts needed to complete a vehicle and supply a VIN

They have to have a Vin to get built.

What if the VIN plaque it gets stamped onto is a constraint part?

Hmm… :unsure::ROFLMAO:

The plate is destroyed if there is an error. The VIN process is a federally regulated process. Ford isn’t issuing a VIN without parts. If a truck crashes and destroys 50 sets of seats the vehicles will be held up in body or paint until the seats are secured for those units. Usually supply chain pulls other seats ahead and stops future VINs for the pulled ahead seats.

I can't imagine they'd start a build without having every part accounted for.

Yeah, I was joking around… I realize the VIN is required. Just poking fun at the parts constraints roller coaster we’ve all been on ;)

Years ago there were 2 guys at a Ford plant, one ran the vin plate job, the other drove cars out to the yard. They got together and made a lot of $ around the same VINs being on 2 cars at the same time…………

No. It will not be built w/o a VIN for a consumer car.

I think they are doing it pretty regularly right now. They build them, set them in lots and wait for the missing parts. They do have a VIN however.

Wow. That seems so wrong. Unless they’re all waiting for the same part(s).

It’s problematic for sure, but holding up the line for certain parts may be more expensive in the end than running the line and “re-manufacturing “ some vehicles. I had an acquaintance that had an entire business focused on doing exactly that (worked for all the major manufacturers, including BMW, “Big 3” and a couple of “Asian “ companies).
