With the ridiculously high cost of gas these days, I was wondering whether anyone has tried 87 octane gas with their 2.7L Bronco.

I realize there are performance benefits with the higher octane options, but not sure whether 87 can harm my Bronco.

Any thoughts?

With a 10:1 compression ratio, you should be using higher octane fuel, but I think I read somewhere that there’s some sort of sensor that can tell if it’s running lower octane fuel and adjusts the timing accordingly to prevent engine knock. I’m not really sure how that works, I thought engine knock was from premature combustion before the plug even sparks.

It is. Higher octane resists preignition better. Advance timing allows the fuel more time to mix and vaporize, thus making it more efficient at producing power. Retarding the timing gives the fuel less time to preignite but also less time to mix for the most efficient burn.

What does the owners manual recommend ?

Running 87 will only hurt your Broncos feelings, not its engine. :(

As others have said, the owners manual says it can take 87 octane.

If you are towing or off-roading, the same manual recommends 91+ octane as it gives the engine greater HP and torque.

87 won’t hurt anything, we just lose 15hp and small 5-10% efficiency gains. That garbage 85 octane they serve you as regular in CO will mess up your engine though. I’m amazed rental car companies in Denver rent out boosted engines and don’t have any warning saying fill up with minimum 87 octane.
