Can manual transmission shift knob be unscrewed and replaced with aftermarket?

For those with a manual, I am curious if the shift knob can be replaced with something custom? Does it screw off?

I haven't tried to unscrew mine but I don't think any standard aftermarket shift knob will work on it. The collar that you pull up on to shift gears pulls up into a recess in the knob, so any replacement would have to accommodate that.

I expect the aftermarket will get to this. I had a custom-painted shift knob with laser engraving done for my Focus ST…now I just need to remember who it was that did this…
