Real question is why would you even put your pistol in a lock box?

Numerous reasons, If I need to go into a restricted location such as my child's school, Post office, Government office. I am not going to simply leave it in the vehicle unsecured.

If you work in a secure location and can't take your weapon into the workplace (e.g., an airport) and don't want to leave it unsecured in the vehicle.

I've been putting my carry piece (Taurus G4X) in the vault holstered when I have to leave it. No issues.

Ya'll made me curious, so I just tried a 4.7 inch barreled full size CZ, a 4 inch M&P 2.0 Compact, and even a 4 inch K frame revolver. They will all fit in the vault unholstered. It wouldn't be a quick draw, but that's not what the vault is for.

While you’re in the vehicle find the right space for it. When you’re leaving it in the vehicle get the underfloor cargo safe.

Be careful and know your state laws. Some states with concealed carry (no open carry) and brandishing laws, the last thing you want to do is remove your firearm from concealment outside the vehicle and store in the back cargo area. Bystanders may see you with the firearm and call the police.

Just so everyone knows, the stock console opening measures a generous 7”w X 8”deep. This safe reduces that to a 4 1/2” X 5” knuckle bleeding booby trap.! Qwikdraw McGraw would have trouble pulling even my Keltec 380 and certainly not a 1911 out of this tiny orifice when milliseconds count.! I even discovered a 12 volt power point in there after removing the safe.!
My 6" 686 in holster rides nicely in the net thingy on my driver's side door. Not real visible from outside and offers quick access. When I'm home it goes in with me.
I don't park in sketchy places and put it under seat with cable lock if need be.
I live in AZ and usually it's carried.
Paul.

I removed my console safe today. Attached pic explains why. This is a medium frame 9mm. No way I could remove/replace this jewel while practicing grip and trigger discipline.! Makes this safe NOT safe.!

Proper storage should fit the gun and a trigger guard or holster. Trigger should not be exposed, if you need it In a hurry the chance for a ND is multiplied if it's exposed.

I use safariland QLS forks on all my holsters and have a receiver clip on my belt and corresponding receiver clips on the center console and in my headrest vault.

When I get into the car the gun and holster together come out of the QLS clip on my belt and are inserted into the relevant receiver clip in the car. At NO point does the gun come out off the holster, ever. The kit all moves together as one.

The TLDR of it is of you can't fit your gun and holster together into your security system then the security solution is not viable.

This is the way.

I use a tailgate box for a JL which was an easy retrofit to my BD.
