Exploding Back Glass

Spit balling here, as I am still Broncoless. Is it easy to close the rear glass without latching it? (I can get over my skis and see this happening to me). Could it have bounced open, hit the spare and slammed shut, causing the explosion? Especially if the glass was bad?

A bb or pellet could have done it, doesn’t have to be a bullet.

There are plenty of d*ckheads out there that think it's funny to do this on freeways. A year or two ago dozens of cars had their glass shot on freeways out down here with bb guns.

But yes sometimes tempered glass just decided on it's own to quit on life. It's internally stressed already, so even small amounts flexing or pressure can just cause it to let go. Can even happen just sitting in your garage.

Had a buddies Jeep rear glass explode in his driveway just two weeks ago in the middle of the night, has video of it on his cameras, he did some research and it’s happened to a few jeeps, he said there are reports of microscopic pieces of metal getting in the glass during manufacture and sometimes cause this, sounds like QC issue…

Mine exploded while sitting in my garage off the truck. Although to be fair I was attempting to close it and just assumed it was my fault somehow. I was pushing it closed in the center of the window and it just exploded in my hand-sounded like a gunshot went off and flew 15' in every direction
I know Ford says to store the top with the window open but having it just sticking out like that for weeks at a time seemed like an accident waiting to happen. Which happened anyways.

Oh and of course they are on a nationwide backorder so after 15 phone calls I found a dealership that claims they can still get one-at a $1k cost. Now to wait if it actually shows up as they claim. Apparently most dealerships won't ship glass so hopefully the local shop comes through.

When glass shatters in this method it is often from an issue called a cat's eye fracture.

I think anyone with a Bronco where the rear glass, or any glass for that matter, shattered, should report this as what seems like a negligence problem on the owner, may actually be a manufacturing/production and/or installation mater.
Ford needs to know this.
And we need Ford to know this so that owners can get warranty replacement satisfaction and not frustration..

Tempered glass is used because it's safer when it breaks. The alternative is plate glass that breaks into sharp shards.

Some folks here with some ignorant complaining.
