Best way to get some visual on it is to do an actual listing on the Raptor member's market section, do a "WTB" or "looking for" title.

If it feels off, trust your gut.

Or if you can purchase the item in-person in a public area instead of paying for the item to be shipped, then do that. Always do what feel right and safe.

PM is fine, it's how business is normally done selling or buying items.
Ask for a picture of the item with a piece of paper in the shot of today's date on it along with their username on the forum.
Should solidify whether the item is real or not and in their possession or not.
I would not go Venmo-ing any money just yet though.
If local enough to go do the deal in person, better than "trust".
Most people are fine.
But scammers are out there and have no scruples about relieving you of your money.
