I like the idea of the metal storage box, but it makes the back much higher than the rear seats when they’re folded flat. This is a problem as it makes door storage ride too high, but most problematic is how it makes laying flat to sleep impossible.
As I plan to sleep on the back on trips up to the mountains, it needs to be flat.
So, although not secure and lockable (yet), it does add a protective layer of lowered visibility when stuff is underneath. It also provides a means to store the very light weight windows, keeps them from flying out) when the top is down/off.
2x4s cut to size
1/2” plywood cut to size and then in 2 pieces
Piano hinge
Black fabric
Upholstery fabric
Spray glue
Staple gun
L brackets
Longer screws which match those from the tie-downs
Now to figure out how to fill in the space behind the driver (or passenger) seat when it’s fully moved forward so my head has something to rest on.
For what it’s worth, I’m 6’3” and have plenty of room. I’d guess that someone 6’7” or so could sleep in this at an angle.
Only the side windows fit underneath. I still had to use the bungee net to hold the rear window up against the back of the rear seat as in my prior post.
Someone had once asked about the steel locker… whether or not it could hold a SBR or similar. I can safely place a few American made LBR AND/or SBRs back there… for local transport of course. I tried a different “type” with a side charging handle. The space underneath the storage was insufficient for this. The “item” needs to be rather slim.
Hope this helps!
