Philly, make sure you stake your claim to the Free 72 oz steak in Amarillo when visiting Palo Duro Canyon.

https://www.bigtexan.com/72-oz-steak/

72oz Steak Challenge Rules
72oz Steak Dinner Challenge Includes: Shrimp Cocktail, Baked Potato, Salad, with Roll, Butter, and of course the 72oz Steak
1. Entire meal must be completed in one hour. If any of the meal is not consumed (swallowed)…YOU LOSE!
2. Before the time starts, you will be allowed to cut into the steak, and take one bite. If the steak tastes good and is cooked to your satisfaction, we will start the time upon your acceptable approval. The time will not stop, and the contest is on, so make SURE before you say “yes.”
3. Once you have started you are not allowed to stand up, leave your table, or have anyone else TOUCH the meal.
4. You will be disqualified if anyone assists you in cutting, preparing or eating of your meal. This is YOUR contest.
5. You don’t have to eat the fat, but we will judge this.
6. Should you become ill, the contest is over… YOU LOSE! (Please use the container provided as necessary.)
7. You are required to pay the full amount up front; if you win we will refund 100%.
8.You must sit at a table that we assign.
9. If you do not win the steak challenge, you are welcome to take the leftovers with you.
10. No consumption or sharing of the leftovers is allowed in the restaurant once the contest is over.
11. If you fail to complete the challenge, you must pay the full $72 dollars.

Best of luck to you. I think you’ll like Texas. My Dad lived there for 30 years and his dad for 50 before that. Can get warm but sure beats this damn cold. Cost wise, it’s a wash, income tax is eaten up by other things like insurance, property tax, sales tax etc. People are really nice but coming from the north, the slow pace can be frustrating. Seemed to take a guy I worked with from North Dallas 5 minutes to get to the question!

Lived my entire life in Texas, specifically the DFW area, here are a few things people have mentioned, and may not have mentioned......

1) Dallas is not TX, it is not country (hipster vibes)...Fort Worth is TX, country and Bronco types of people....not saying Dallas is bad...but a Bronco community would slide more to Ft Worth.
2) Babe's Chicken Dinner House (Try the location in Roanoke, TX - it was their very first location)
3) Schlitterbahn - Unsure if you have kids, but going to this water park in New Braunfels, TX is a rite of TX passage for kids, and at nighttime on the vacation visit by Grist Mill for dinner and the Dance Hall in Gruene, TX.
4) For someone working in Farmers Branch, unsure of your "scene or homelife (kids vs. no kids)"
---IF Kids, recommend living in Coppell, Grapevine, Colleyville, Corinth, Lake Dallas
---No Kids, maybe Addison, Farmers Branch, and if looking to bar swing with hipsters find a downtown Dallas loft (But be careful of area - get a younger knowledgeable realtor for party scene location)
5) Tex Mex: THIS WILL BE A DEBATE so only tossing out some of my favorites that are close to me and some that are somewhat "franchised/multiple family owned locations"......Mi Cocina (multiple), Velvet Taco (multiple locations - BEST elotes IMO), Baja (multiple locations), Mi Dia From Scratch (Multiple Locations), Los Compadres (Roanoke, TX), Torchy's Tacos (Multiple Locations "Fast Casual"), for fast food reference (I know don't judge) Taco Casa versus the others...I'm sure there are many others that are good as well that people can recommend.
6) Non Tex Mex Gems: Marty B's (Bartonville, TX), Heim's BBQ (Ft. Worth, TX), Love Shack (Ft. Worth, TX), Rodeo Goat (Ft. Worth, TX), Whiskey Cake (Multiple Locations), Pecan Lodge (Dallas, TX), Chef Point (Grapevine, TX)
7) Billy Bob's - Immediately visit a Cavender's or Justin Boots, or Boot Barn and get yourself a nice pair of cowboy boots, and then take a weekend night to head over to Billy Bob's (The world's largest honky tonk) and listen to some country music and drink some beers, pretty much any country artist that has ever existed has graced this location.
8) Not a recommendation - TX is a driving state, so an hour away is not a long ways away....and if someone let's you in on the freeway from the onramp, remember to wave, or potentially feel the TX "Bless Your Heart"....honestly, just wave anytime someone does anything remotely nice while driving (it's not hard).
9) We are easily some of the nicest people you will ever meet, just remember when in an argument and wanting to avoid a TX dustup, offering to buy a beer settles most everything (utilize this to find common ground). *Unless you feel you are more of a country person (Ft. Worth) and arguing with someone in Dallas, then just give them a nudge and it will be over ;)
10) Attend a high school football game, recommend for over-dramatization of our love of football Allen High School (just google their home game schedule)
11) If you have kids (here are some fun places - depending on age) Peppa Pig World (Grapevine Mills Mall), Legoland (Grapevine Mills Mall), Six Flags Over Texas (Arlington, TX - the first location ever for Six Flags), Coyote Drive-In Movie Theater (Fort Worth, TX), Fossil Rim Wildlife Park - you drive car through "zoo"), Fort Worth Zoo (best in the nation!),
12) For gambling: Casino Winstar (Thackerville, OK - about 45 mins to 1 hour north Denton), Choctaw Casino (Durant, OK - about 45 mins to 1 hour north of Plano) [Winstar > Choctaw], Lone Star Park Horse Racing (Grand Prairie, TX).....

This is not nearly all the knowledge I could part on you, but should help.

Of course Hutchins BBQ beats Rudy's any day of the week.
Spring Creek is not bad...but the really good ones are the one-offs in the small towns all over the state! Shep's or Rump's in Palestine!!! Hard 8 in Stephenville.

Yes, Hutchins only has two locations, Spring Creek is okay but does seem more like a chain taste.

Try their Texas Twinkies
Our famous Texas Twinkies now serving seven days a week.

A large jalapeño stuffed with brisket & cream cheese and wrapped in premium thick cut bacon.

I went to college in Dallas and loved it, lived in metroplex for 7 years total back during the Cowboys 3 Super Bowl run. I'm sure you'll like it but I haven't been back in 20+ years.

I love the sun/heat, but I was ready to move on when it came time to get a real job and quit wearing shorts and t shirts all the time. I'm more into the traditional seasonal climates.

Make friends with someone who owns a boat or pool or hit the southern coastal sections for a break.

Good luck.

Unless you want your cars to look like golf balls from hail, get covered parking for them.

Ask me how I know. 😉
Yes, the hail can be hell! Here is what a 3in. hail stone does to an acrylic skylight in Texas!

Another really nice thing about Texas, some of the 2 lane back roads are still 75 mph. When you come up on someone, once they realize you are there ( sometimes takes a while!) they move over to the shoulder and let you pass. As I said earlier, not always as in a hurry as us up north. Anyways, a nice wave in the mirror is always appreciated. I was doing the run from Madison Wi thru Wichita Falls to Kerrville every 6 - 8 weeks for several years. The back roads were a time saver compared to 35. Took me 18 hours but the hammer was down much of the time.

Let's not forget this week's blackouts, I'm now shopping for a whole house standby generator.
Same here after the Hurricane Sally experience.
