Which cargo carrier do you have and do you LOVE it? We do a lot of beaching and fishing and bought a cheaper one thinking it would be good for what we do & it didn't survive the first trip! I'm debating between a Pakmule and a Ruc Rak, but would love to know pros/cons of both from someone who has used either.

P.S. I couldn't possibly love my Bronco anymore than I do! Seriously can't think of anything else I would rather drive.

I have a Kurt and love it! But it is steel. If you are planning alot of beach outings you definitly need aluminum. There's Pak Mule, but damn, they are expensive. All the other aluminum ones seem flimsy to me.

They are so expensive :/ that's why we went with a $100 one from Amazon hoping it would hold up lol

I’ve got this one:
https://www.1up-usa.com/product/60in-hitch-mounted-cargo-carrier/

Pros:
All aluminum
It’s a beast
No hitch extender needed
Built-in anti-wobble
Raised to reduce impact on ground clearance
Can add trays for two bikes (May exceed receiver capacity though)

Cons:
Can’t open swing gate with gear loaded
Expensive

I just pulled the trigger on a pakmule sway-back... Definitely hard on the wallet but after researching it seems to be the best option if you want lightweight and corrosion resistant while still being a single welded piece that won't wobble/sag over time. Plus now I don't need to buy and store separate racks for bikes and fishing poles, just the small add-on parts from pakmule or make some custom pieces to attach to the rails.

The 1 Up was a close 2nd option, but its smaller and didn't love the eye hook strap points. Plus after adding 2x bike racks it becomes pretty bulky and ends up costing more than the pakmule + bike hardware anyway.

Which Curt model do you have? I have been considering the 18152. Some of the negative reviews freak me out a bit.

I've got the Aluminium Curt. It's a little smaller than some but handles what I need.

I spotted two different Harbor Freight units on the road yesterday. They appeared to be pretty stable. The reviews are horrible though.

I have the curt 18112 in black. Folds up on my suburban. Won’t fold up on the bronco with the spare. It’s a good carrier.
Unfortunately they have went up $150 over the last month with inflation. Got mine 2 months ago for $300. same Amazon list.

Im pretty sure the Rockland one is the exact same as the curt for a lower price.

Did you need to add an extension for hitch receiver in order to clear the spare? I figure maybe no because the length of the shank from the front of the basket to the end of the shank is 2.875".

I don’t want something wider than 50”. I’ve been looking at this Curt. I have the Kuat pivot mount to swing it out of the way. The pivot is good for 250#, the Curt only weighs 25. It doesn’t fold, but that should mean it’s stronger.

I was also looking at this one that folds up, but it’s out of stock at Amazon. 38# and aluminum.

I have a steel Rola and Kuat V2 pivot. The basket rises up to give plenty of ground clearance and the pivot mount swings well clear of tailgate and spare. All mounts solidly with no sway. The basket is heavy, being steel, but also means it is strong.
