So, if I don't convert my reservations, what should I get?

Explorer. land cruiser. 4Runner. Edge (don’t knock it - I have one - it’s fantastic for city and suburbs, will get to the trailhead but not off-road)

Audi wagon?

Hyundai got big, big props in the Wall Street journal just recently. They have a new cross over SUV that’s also getting good reviews.

now, for fun - Mahindra Thrar. Look it up. Jeep Wrangler knockoff, stole the plans to that Death Star years ago, kept making it when the deal ended - with just enough changes to keep the lawyers off their butt.

Unfortunately Ford has many of us by the teeth and they know it.

If you’re the type of person where a Bronco is something that really interests you (we are) and you don’t want an FCA product (many of us don’t) there aren’t too many inspiring alternatives.

Personally if I were in your spot with something quick and something practical. I’d go with something older and different to beat around town in; but sounds like you want a new vehicle. I’m sitting here wracking my brain I literally can’t think of anything besides those you’ve already listed.

Seems like your options are go with Bronco or wait and see if they don’t nuke the 4Runner to unibody, see what the new Tacoma/Colorado are like. Not anything that fits your criteria that hasn’t been listed.

It’s redundant with the F150 in your driveway, but the Ram off road pickup gets great reviews as far as I’ve seen. Maybe not so practical in the city.

Mercedes Sprinter and Ford Transit van. Those are two stalwart European city cargo haulers.

edit: Ford has an off-road concept video for a new variant of the transit. It looks like a European video me. Basically, make nature dwelling van life a turnkey solution.

Explorer ST would get my vote, but I saw a Kia Telluride with the nightfall package the other day and it looked pretty sharp.

I'm definitely open to older. I enjoy garage tinkering, so a "project" might be cool. No EB, though - the prices for even junk have jumped too much.

I recently discovered the AT4 trim on the GMCs. I don't normally like GMC stuff but the Canyon and Acadia with the AT4 package is very interesting. Even has the interior most of us wanted on the Bronco. Tows 4,000lbs too.

Sounds like a 4Runner or Telluride might fit the bill if you want room for car camping

Honestly I have considered just keeping my Jeep and dumping all the cash I was going to spend on the Bronco into my old Mustang.

Been thinking about the same thing. Can get a fully loaded Toyota Tacoma for less than my Big Bend build is now. Might be heading that route.
