LSD. You'll also need new gears and a qualified person to install. Expect to pay $1500-2000 all said and done.
How much would you think it would be to do a locking diff instead?

The labor and installation parts will be almost identical, so you're looking at the difference between the trac-lok and locker carriers. There are a few options ranging from around $800-1500.

or for a little more, you can find a set of pull-out axles from a bronco with better gears AND a rear locker. I was finding sets with 4.46's for around 2500 for the pair

I believe the ring gear is welded to the carrier in the M220 with 3.73 gears, so you likely will need new gears even if you stay with the 3.73 ratio... So that's another $3~500.

M-4204-BR $325
M-4210-R $225
YG DM220FD-373 $430

So that's $980 just for parts...

I would not waste time/money installing a tracloc, worst of all the options….

That is pretty decent, what is needed to be able to activate the lockers?

find the right plug to clip into the connector, run wiring to an aux switch or switch of your choosing with 12v power

Do you think you could wire up the factory locker buttons on the dash if you were to buy it and connect it?

anything is possible, but off the top of my head, i would say it would take finding the correct harness or running independent wires up to the fuse box and (assuming) body control module, creating a new circuit in the fuse box, getting a new button array for the dash, and enabling via forscan or possibly FDRS (ford's dealership software)

... easier to just run an aftermarket switch to click on and off

Yes but it's a lot of work. Not worth it in my opinion. There is a thread on it somewhere.

Plus hooking them to an aux switch will allow ya to use them whenever ya want/need them and a weird “error code” won’t make them unavailable…

Best reason of all! They act up at the worst times, like 3 hours deep into a 8/10 trail.

Ford sales a switch for the lockers if you were to decide to add them later.
M14489BR According to the instructions they are not installed on the dash but installed in the cubby where the phone charger thing is or somewhere around there. I have 3.73 and was trying to piece together a gear swap.
