Well, they were not my insurance company, they were the insurance company of the other driver, so that might make a difference.

Yep, not a USAA customer, an adversarial claimant. Huge difference.

USAA left a sour taste in my mouth right after I got out of the Army. I got a car, and needed to get insurance. Everyone raved about USAA, but when I applied, I was not eligible. I had 4 years of active duty, and they required 4 years and 1 day at the time. That requirement is since been dropped, but the sour taste remains. They knew exactly what they were doing with requiring an extra day over the basic 4 year enlistment.

They were originally intending to serve "career" military members.

From USAA's founding in 1922 until 1973 it's membership was restricted to only Commissioned Officers. Eligibility was expanded to include enlisted personnel in the 70's. Over subsequent decades, eligibility broadened further to include veterans, their 3rd generation never thought about serving family members; even if they own Wranglers and Bronco Sports.

(Not so) fun story - son was in an accident, full air-bag deployment, smashed front end. Insurance adjuster told him, yeah, we're totaling it. He went out and bought a new vehicle the next day based on that info . Insurer called him again and said, "yeah, on second thought - we may not total it"

Angry conversations ensued and finally they did total it, but it was a stressful couple of days.

I got my Bronco after my Ranger was t-boned and totaled. Rolled me on my side and brutalized my poor truck. But ithe Ranger did its job and kept me safe (the second time a Ford has done that for me). The wild part? I kept track of my VIN and afterward it was sold as salvage. The truly wild part is that it somehow ended up in Ukraine. I still wonder what became of it. Did it go into battle?
