Hey 6G,
It was great seeing many of you at trail meetup this past weekend. It’s amazing to see our group grow to 15 rigs, we even had a Jeep join our ranks. Thanks again to all who made the event, and kept it a fun, safe and positive experience.
For those unfamiliar with the trail, Rattlesnake canyon is a 27-mile trail that goes from the Johnson Valley area up to Big Bear. It’s rated a 4 and makes it way up the mountain and connects to other trails within the Big Bear Mountain trail system. The trail itself follows a river wash, and has plenty sections to test your capabilities. It has 3 true challenges within it, that can be navigated without a spotter, but a good one always helps make it an easier day.
The first challenge is just a warm up. It’s a tight squeeze that goes through a small creek, and requires you to travers a 20” rock on your passenger side. The water from the creek adds some slippage, and makes it more fun while you’re on it. It does use a little travel, but can be done in 2WD with or without the use of a locker
The next obstacle is very similar, it’s a tight left turn that requires you to navigate through two tight rocks. If you turn to tight, you’ll get the divers side tire hung up. Too wide and you’ll clip your bumper, and get hung up on a much larger rock... ask me how I know. We used two spotters to help navigate everyone through. Shot out to Danny for stepping up and helping get us through the tight section.
The last obstacle was the most difficult one. It’s another tight right turn, but this one involves a large step up. There is also a complication of a large bolder bocking the swing up into the tight section of the turn, making it feel like you must thread the needle to get through. I'll post some videos once the group sends them over. There were two ways to approach this obstacle:
After a quick recharge at the cabin, we hit the trail and connected with Burns Canyon. From there it was a quick ride home, on more structured trails that offered some great scenery for the end of the day. Once we hit the end of the trail, we aired back up and started our journeys to either a local watering hole or home.
Again, we appreciate everyone making it out! Its great meeting everyone, and getting to help each other grow in our off-road skills. After we collect photos and videos from everyone, we will put together a video to share for us all to enjoy. I'll also try to find more of the obstacles, I didnt have much content for them since I was helping direct people through.
Thanks for all the photo sharing so far, please tag anyone I forgot. We look forward to doing more meetups in the future!
Cheers,
AJ

I'll post some videos once the group sends them over. There were two ways to approach this obstacle:
- The first is to swing hard to the left and climb the rock, the next step is to use the large bolder on the other side to help ease the vehicle over and make the climb over it. This is the best technique for longer wheelbases such as on the 4 doors.
- The second technique is to thread the needle between the rocks pointed at the larger bolder, and slowly leverage and climb up the obstacle. This was tight with the 4 doors, but worked best for the 2 doors.
