I have ‘25 2.7 OBX I bought last November and I am at 4800 miles on it and have not done my first oil change, I was planning on doing it right before I got to 5k but I am now going to be taking it on a 800mile round trip road trip next week. We were planning on taking my wife’s Blazer but we found it has a radiator leak and wouldn’t be able to repair in time for the trip.

My question is will it be fine to push the oil change until after the trip or should I try and get it done beforehand? We leave for the trip next Thursday

Given the fuel dilution that a 2.7L engine has, I would have changed it long ago. In the first 1,000 miles, the factory oil in my 2.7L was already an xW-20 viscosity.

I would change it.

The first oil change is arguably the most important because it has all the particles from the engine break in. Some people even do a couple of oil changes early on as the engine breaks in but probably the mass majority of people on the road just go by what the oil life indicator says and don't think twice.

If you can do a quick oil change before the trip then great! If not then don't stress too much just don't go past the oil life monitor on the dash.

Do you do your own oil or go to a shop?

Thanks for the responses everyone, I just scheduled to get it changed at the dealership on Wednesday, piece of mind to not be thinking the whole drive man I probably should have changed my oil before we left

Just do it now. Especially on a brand new engine.

I would change it now because there are a lot of wear abrasives picked up by the oil during the first few thousand miles since new, which can in turn cause further wear in the engine if left in long enough. It’s not a big deal if you can’t. I’d just try to average no more than 5,000 miles between on these ecoboost engines because of their fuel dilution tendencies. Going to 7-8k every once in awhile probably makes no difference in the long run. I say that based on one of my Broncos that has gone to 7500 a few times on Mobil 1 and still looks great on oil analysis and borescope at 40k.

The OEM motorcraft blend oil does seem to have a tendency to lose a bit more viscosity than other brands. I’m starting to think a euro 30 (VW504/porsche C30) or an API 40 (HTHS >= 3.5) is the way to go in these engines, as a few other members here have been advocating for all along. I’m using the Valvoline R&P 5W-30 but even it has been taken down to a 5W-20 viscosity in under 1000 miles by the > 5% dilution in winter.

@jjack50 - curious as to what is so funny with the above.

Doing that early oil change will get your bearings and rings to 300k miles vs the 250k miles if you change every 10k.

Get 100 % synthetic for the love of turbo bearings dealers use semi synthetic.....better than dino oil but not best for extreme turbo heat...
