Hi gang.

I'm trying to clear more back-cargo-area space, and add some rear-view visibility. I currently have the SSV pods, which are great---but bulky. I'm considering making this set of DIY pods and mounting them to the underside of the C-pillar's threaded holes. For reference, the driver's side's not-so-secret bottle opener is slightly below where I want to mount the pod. (though I'd mount toward the top of the pillar)

If I center-mount the pod on the pillar with a 6.5" speaker, it will protrude somewhat inside and outside the footprint of the pillar. There is plenty of space before I get to the hard-top windows, so I'm not worried about having enough physical space to do it. But I *am* wondering if it will be an issue when the top is completely off. Super noisy? Will it mess with speaker performance / get splatted with bugs?

My questions:
1. Do you think this will be an issue?
2. Anyone have any better suggestions for mounting?
3. Anyone solved this a problem a different way?

I think as long as you can clear the window you will be fine - but that area gets tight quick, and it may make removing the top all together, or adding a soft top later, more of a challenge if that is of any concern to you

Bugs/wind - don’t think it will be much different, but you will want two mounting points (normally it mounts on both top and side) otherwise it’s very likely to vibrate and may eventually break the plastic wirh fatigue.

Honestly I think you may be better off just going back to the smaller pods for visibility if that’s your main concern. I don’t think this move will net you much, but I havent looked at it in detail so maybe I’m wrong.

Only other thing I’ve seen was the sound bar mounted to the pillar but that definitely makes visibility worse.

Thanks. I guess I do need to check the "lip" of the hard top to see what clearance looks like there.

Honestly I do kinda wish that I kept the OG pods and just sized up the speakers (I recently saw that done here), but now that I've bought the 6.5's and the SSVs ... hoping to keep the speakers, sell the pods, and try something new that improves space and visibility.

You might be able to trade the SSV pods for OEM. I would think that anyone wanting the SSV pods would do that trade.

Looks to me like relocating will be more trouble than it's worth. Other options are to put 6X9 boxes somewhere. Again, would have to re-route the wiring though.
