Everyone had great ideas, but no said a good winch.

1. It gets you out quicker so water is good, but you'll get back for more.
2. Jack's are good, but mud/ruts, no match.
3. You're alone, but you always have a winch.
4. Low gears are good, but a winch, well...
5. Now a good single malt, that's a little tougher, but you'll get back sooner to enjoy amazing glass with friends around the fire and talk about how the winch got us back.
6. The deflation/inflation system works great, but the winch will pull you up or let you down.
7. The only thing that I can think of that's better than a "winch" are great friends to share the wheeling stories with.

I've had to walk out at least once that I can remember as well. I had one of those hateful jacks. If I didn't believe in packing out your own trash, it would have been chucked in the woods for the squirrels to deal with.

Also, I may be a bit different than most offroaders here. I'm not out there to just drive over stuff, I'm out to explore. A lot of that exploration happens on foot as well.
+1 on the high lift hate.

And you must have better knees than I do. 🤣

Is a winch helpful if you:

Puncture your fuel tank, loose a fuel pump, run dry.
Break an axle, loose a hub, steering knuckle, or steering gear breaks.
Ignition system, electrical system, fuel pump, transmission, or engine craps out.
Radiator get punctured, drive shaft or u-joint break, break a bead and have your tire wrap around an axle.
Suffer a fuel line, coolant hose, brake line, transmission line failure.
Puncture an oil pan, tranny pan, or lose a clutch.

At 80' to 100' per pull, even 125' with my M8274 - 10 to 15 miles from nowhere is a long way to recover (even if you could).

Over the years I've seen all of these failures, and a few more where a winch was all but useless. Don't misunderstand my opinion, a winch is a tool which can be helpful, but they are not the answer to all problems.

There are a few good threads posted here regarding the most important items to take with you and while opinions differ water is a life saver.

Because I can call someone and get anything I need
I like having an SOS button with the Garmin. They can send help to my coordinates with one push if I’m injured and can’t really jerk around waiting on hold.
