A friend said I can have his factory 6.5" kick panel speakers. Figured I'd pick up a set of Metra pods and replace the OEM 4" speakers on the roll bar. I already turned off factory EQ and set the backs to Speaker when I put in the amp and installed the subwoofer. Assuming the kick panel speakers will fit in the Metra pods. Anyone ever do this?

Depending on the system...I have the B&O and my kick panel speakers are only woofers, no tweeters, so I'm not sure that would be much of an improvement over the stock 4".

Thank you. I added a Kicker amp and factory subwoofer to the base six speaker system. I'm really happy wth the system as it, but has horrible mid range performance on some songs. I prefer an all around sound, and am I'm hoping the larger rollbar speakers will help.

After looking at the factory speakers, the thick mounting ring will cause them to stick about an inch above the mounting surface. The Metra pods may be able to handle this (Mabett speaker grille will interfere with protruding tweeters). The plug is molded into the mounting ring, so it will take a little head scratching to get a clean install.

Like Hemisfear said, the kick panel speakers are 6.5" woofers, so they will only produce mid-bass, no highs and no lows below about 80hz. I replaced my rear pods with larger ones and did Kicker KS 6.5." If I were to do it over again, I would stick with the stock speaker pods and upgrade to a 4" speaker. The rear speaker pods really aren't big enough to produce super low bass. The big difference for me was changing the sub, sub amp, and dash speakers.

If you are going to the trouble of buying 6.5" rear pods - go ahead and dump another $70 on a set of Hertz or Infinity coax speakers to go in there. They are vastly better than the OEM speakers, will work fine with the factory amp, and don't cost a ton of money.

Something like this:

(if you do upgrade to an external amp later, the Infinity or Hertz will still work, but you'd likely want something that could handle a bit more power).

I just picked up a pair of Cpx165's for 30% off and my Metra pods just landed this morning...I think I'm going to need some tuning soon!

Just a bad idea.....the best thing you can do is have all 4" speakers the same. With multiple different speakers you are fighting the overall timbre of the system which can effect the clarity of the system.

"Every sound is composed of a fundamental frequency (the base pitch) and a series of secondary vibrations called harmonics or overtones. The specific combination, strength, and arrangement of these harmonics determine the timbre "

Edit-A high "Quality" 4" speaker.

As an audio technician in a previous life, I think we'll be just fine thank you...

I'm trying to work around the mid range problem you and I discussed off line awhile back. I get a kick out of re-purposing stuff, but those spacer rings are probably going to nix using the kickpanel speakers.

if you do upgrade to an external amp later
I already installed a Kicker amp:

And factory subwoofer box/Kicker 48CWRT674 Speaker:

If you are after mid range, I would try new kick panel midbass woofers first. I have Hertz 165F. After that, you can do 6.5” rear pods if you need more midrange.
Thank you for the suggestion. I need more sound coming from the back for an all around sound (the reason for the 6.5inch pod speakers). The stock 6.5's are not the best, but they are free and would should if I am moving in the right direction. I can always swap them out for something better.

I tried midbass woofers in the kicks. After I got the DSP and started tuning - the woofers i had were exactly what was holding my sound back. Unless you do ~a lot~ of work sealing off the kickpanel -- and throw a lot of power at it -- you are better off going to a balanced speaker in the kick and rear pod and working on making it mesh well with the highly-reflective off-the-glass dash speaker.

I don't recommend woofers in the kicks unless you are willing to chase that dragon a long way. I think it could work but it's gonna make you put in the effort, and I never got it to work out well.
