Napa 6 gallon box of full synthetic like 120 when i last bought some it was cheaper the time before
That would indeed save me about $16 per year if I can find it! Sweet! It's sounding like the walmart 5 quart jugs are a pretty darn good deal though overall, so at least I've been buying from the right place thus far.

I buy it in 350gal totes for work and have it pumped off to thousand gallon site storage tanks. Still costs about $30/gal in bulk that way. Oil isn’t really worth stockpiling; it won’t go bad but if you have a leaker it’s a giant pain in the rear

we only keep enough on site for 1 oil change at a time plus some topoff
Yeah, that's sounding like the case. At least I know I've been getting a pretty good deal at walmart all these years :) Thanks!!

As of now I'm spending about $136 a year on oil excluding the filter (About $36 per oil change) so I don't think that would benefit me in the long run, but I'll look into it to see if the cost would still be less including the $25 membership fee. Thanks for the tip!!
I easily meet the 500 dollar a year threshold to get a free membership. I maintain 4 vehicles and change oil every 5000 miles. As a previous poster stated you could extend your oil changes using Amsoil SS. It's supposed to be good for 25k. I don't do that, but you could get your oil analyzed and see how far you could go before changing. That could save you some frogskins on the Amsoil.

Nah, acting like I'm using dinosaur oil would mean an oil change every 3,000 miles like my grandpa does... But yes, indeed before my fourth oil change after owning the vehicle (which was at 75,000 miles; I bought it with 58k mi, changed it at 60k shortly after buying it (I always change fluids asap after buying a used vehicle), changed the oil at 65k, then 70k, and at 75k I took a sample of the oil) I did send an oil sample to Valvoline and they said that whatever I'm doing is working great for the wear of the engine. They didn't give a suggested oil change interval though. Plus I'm not using the "extended life" oil, I'm using the regular high mileage full synthetic, which makes a difference. I am more in favor of more frequent maintenance so that the vehicle lasts as long as possible. For example, I changed the transmission, transfer case, and differential fluids all at 75k as well instead of the factory recommended 150k. Haven't had any issues yet not coming up on 85k, it purrs like a kitten. I'm also only running 93 octane.
Changing all fluids when buying a used car is often a good idea, depending on the age of the car, mileage, etc.

I had decided to go to extended oil changes with my Subaru. I was using Mobile 1. I sent the oil to Blackstone and they suggested that I could extend the oil changes even farther.

Changing more frequently than needed only hurts your wallet. You'll never see issues from changing fluids more often than needed.

So why not after every time you fill up the gas tank? I know I'm being facetious but you get my point. How do you determine how often other than a "seat of the pants" method or "that's how my father/grandfather did it?"

I tend to keep vehicles a long time and reliability is very import to me. I've talked to a lot of people complaining about how often their car breaks down. I ask them if they do the maintenance and almost every time they say no. You definitely won't have that problem.

I believe in the Amsoil. I had a 2005 tacoma v6. Bought it used with 17k on it. At 231k I pulled both Valve covers because it developed a small leak on the passenger side. The inside looked almost like a new engine. Gave it to my son when he turned 16 and he drove it until he turned 20 with 309k. We traded it on a new toyota camry because he got a job and has to drive almost 2hrs one way to work. Gas would've killed him. Truck still ran perfectly. Never had an engine problem.

5 is the highest number I can count to. So every 5th time the odometer's fourth-from-the-right number changes, I change the oil. Me cave man, me have simple habits. :)
I get what you're saying, joking aside, but every 5k is just a nice, easy number to go by for me. I could probably do every 7k too but I'm just keeping it simple.

$10 more per chance to have Ford do it with 5 tire rotation and they check other fluids. My time is worth that

That's with synthetic blend, not full synthetic. I'd rather spend the extra time doing it myself. Then I know it's done right and I know that the fluid going into my vehicle is actually what I'm paying for. Plus I have the luxury of being able to do everything at home pretty easily anyway. So no need to interact with other people, no need to drive to a stealership, no way to get scammed by the service dept... You get the idea. Not knocking you for going to the dealer to have it done, just offering the explanation of why I prefer doing it myself. :)

I agree with you totally. Whatever I can do myself I take care of. Plus it's an excuse to get some new tools when I don't have what it takes to fix something.

I agree

Changing the oil late can get extremely expensive

So spend a little bit changing too frequently, versus gambling on spending a lot if you don't change often enough.

I don't like gambling with vehicle reliability. But I also don't like spending money I don't have to. I save that money for beer and pizza. That's why I had my oil tested.
