The FDRS requirement is annoying but I wonder how strict that is, considering people swap in aftermarket bumpers regularly.

I have been waiting for Ford to sell this. There is no option to add to cart.

My guess with the very frequent 20% discounts from Ford, this will also put downward pressure on the “take off” prices of these bumpers.

I think I got an $850 “discount” on my BL for downgrading to the capable bumper? If memory serves , with a 20% discount I can buy the mod bumper from Ford for close to the same price I got “refunded” back in 2022 and finally get the bumper I originally wanted.

It was the one thing I regret changing from my original order but was so afraid of having to wait another year to get my Bronco I caved.

It's primarily for reprogramming the restraint control module, system that controls the airbags, seatbelts, etc.

Obviously a steel bumper will react differently in a crash compared to the molded plastic bumper, which is why it needs to be recalibrated.

My personal opinion?? It's a really good idea to get it reprogrammed, especially if this is a family vehicle. But... people go with aftermarket bumpers all the time and never modify the module configuration.

How well would this work with a winch

It's more than just the material because FDRS seems to have different codes for both the steel capable and the steel modular. I get what it's for but I'm wondering exactly what the different settings in FDRS do. Like is it calibrating the front sensors to be more or less sensitive? It's not changing deployment distance of the airbag because that's based on seat position sensors.

Works fine with a winch - the Ford kit is designed to bolt right up in line with the frame and includes frame reinforcements, and there are a lot of aftermarket kits that will as well.

Yeah it's not just the fact the bumper contains steel. (The molded plastic also has steel in it technically.) It's the design of the bumpers themselves. Since the steel bumper and the modular bumper are different designs, they have different RCM configurations. When you add a winch on the front, it also has a different configuration.

I don't know if the programming changes the sensor configuration—obviously brand new so haven't looked at it. My hunch is the answer is "No", as the instructions for the modular bumper without the sensors asks you to apply the exact same configuration change as what you pasted above.

Agree.

Actually meant the front airbag impact sensors.

I see tons of people with winches on aftermarket bumpers and with the "availability" of FDRS, I would wager almost no one reprograms this.

Has anyone priced having a dealership do the reprogramming? The winch has been around for a while and it has the same disclaimer.

Do we have any forum sponsors who offer discounts on Ford Performance parts?

Random question, is it possible to order the end caps only?

It’s going to vary largely dealer to dealer most likely. Best option would be to just ask your dealer. What other charge may be completely different than yours.
