It's prudent. There's precious little privacy in our lives these days. NSA has a record of your every keystroke. Like securing your property from at least a few levels of larceny and burglary talent, if you can keep certain amateur hackers from looking you up (on the DMV data base), you reduce your exposure to identity intrusion and theft.
Of course, there's always a certain level of criminal expertise and determination that can victimize you
