Like I said...
  • Toyo Open Country AT3
    • Size 285/75r17
    • Load range c
    • Increased from 32.1" to 33.9" tall
    • 30ish lbs in weight gain per corner
    • Running at 36psi
  • Method 703 wheels
    • +35 offset
    • 17x8.5
  • No lift
  • No level
  • Puny diffs
  • Big engine
  • No tune
  • Kept the crash bars
I've scoured just about every thread on this forum looking for answers so Ill get the questions started!

Does it feel any different?
No not really.

The acceleration feels about the same.
I hear some new fwaping at highway speeds compared to the deulers but the sound levels pass the wife test.
How does it fit without a lift/level?
Idk lol!?

The installers were shocked when there was no rubbing.
Going off-roading in a couple weeks will report back if any rubbing occurs.
Is there any poke?
The tread block seems to be in line with the color matched fenders flairs. The sidewalls poke out a tasteful amount.
Does the spare tire fit on the tailgate with the original hardware without trimming the bump stops?
Yes!
Are there any downsides so far?
Went down a road with lose stones - Caught my first real rock chips.
Rain outside = Spray spray everywhere.

... Now I feel like I actually have to get mud flaps.
Wow! Toyos & Methods are such a gorgeous combo!
Oh I know! I am so happy I didn't go with cheeto tires (K02s)

Overall I am thus far overjoyed with my decision to go for the 285/75's over the 70s.

Any other questions?

I look forward to your reports off road, etc.
You'll have to let us know how the Bronco works out with that combination and a 3.73 diff.
Couple weeks are up! I went off-roading today at Badlands off-road park in Attica Indiana.

Lets do some rapid fire questions just like last time!

Ill start with some minor updates before getting to what y'all really want to know.

Any issues yet?
In the last couple days I think think the tailgate has started to develop a creek when driving over bumps. Still not 100% sure but hopefully I won't have to end up with an ugly aftermarket solution.

How's your mpg now?
Still no numbers. I feel like they are meaningless to most people here since I do 100% Chicago city driving.

I can say Its definitely lower.

The last couple times I went to the off-road park I was able to fill up at the same gas station with 10-20 miles left in the tank. This time I was short by 5. Part of this could also be attributed to my day at the park being a little more intense than usual. So I will continue to report back over the next few times.

How's the ride offroad?
So funny thing happens when you get distracted airing down. You sometimes take too much out.

Saying that, I stared the day at 16psi. It made the ride much too bouncy for the "service roads" between park sections at badlands. Think deep to really deep pot holes perfectly spaced so you hit one on driver and then passenger almost continuously.

Once I found the group I was riding with for the day I pulled out my pump and went up to 21 psi and that smoothed things out a bit.

The extra sidewall was noticed while driving up a stream with a base of large stone (2-6" diameter id say) Much smoother ride than I'm used to on that trail.

Oh so what did you end up doing at the park today?
Well here are some of the sketchier things I did today.
  • Lifted the rear wheels a few times.
  • Lots of donuts
  • Got into some mud and rutts, got stuck on the frame up against a mud wall so the drivers door was pinned closed and I really couldn't really turn the wheel. Ended up being winched out but the first pull put my front wheels in a position at almost full lock to passenger still stuck in the rutt. So we repositioned the winch before I snapped somethin in my front end to get me out. (also I think the recovery boards actually did something to help haha)
  • Did some light "rock crawling" you know nothing too sketchy, still don't got lockers, but more like going up and down small vertical steps including "the tubes" where you drop out of and can crawl up into a pair of drainage pipes at the head of the creek. It has like a good Good like 1-2ft rolled edge drop/climb out where that front end is definitely compressing on the way down.
  • Lots of tight berms that those mx riders that buzz around all day love. Think tight banked turns at slow speeds where your bronco is tipping over at almost uncomfy angles.
  • Big water filled holes <3.
  • Higher speed done goofing aka getting caught off guard by some nice bumps in the pebble dunes at speed and bouncing up and down all over the place.
Did your puny diffs explode?
No!

Honestly I can't say I even notice the increase in tire size from the driveline side of things. I think it does donuts better than it ever did before in the pebble fields at badlands now.

So those crash bars... You took them off before going right?
Nope!

Still got the crash bars. Still no rubbing.
Still smacking under your bronco left and right?
So in the past there have been a number of spots at the park where that I have scraped the frame/cross members/stock steps (Those poor poor steps have taken so much abuse. I need real sliders)/whatever that part where the bottom of the 4 link suspension connects is called.

I tried to hit them all today. Only Scraped the tow hook, and something else down under once.

So those duelers you had before... World of difference in terms of traction?
No not really.

Obviously the toyos are better off-road. However once aired down I can't say I was having any traction issues before on the types of trails and features I am comfy doing (in my households singular vehicle) before. If it weren't for the increased ride height I am unsure if this upgrade would be worth it from the practical side of things (100% worth it in terms of style points).

Take this as a complement to the duelers. They could be much worse.

Are you still glad ya did it?
Hell yea!

You gonna lift it bro!?
I still don't want to put on a cheap lift.

The practical side of my brain is screaming NO DO IT PROPERLY but its also saying AAAHHH THATS A LOT OF MONEY AND YOU DON'T EVEN WANT TO GET THAT MUCH TALLER.

Now I'll reopen the floor to the rest of you. Questions? Comments? Unsolicited life advice?

Wow, I didn't realize anyone made a +35 aftermarket wheel! Looks great. Are they 17x8?

I run the same size and tire. I think my offset is alittle more and I’ll get a slight rub at full turn reversing on the crash bar.

Looks awesome! I went with exactly the same tire on a method 701, but I went with the zero offset—I would have gone +18, but Method doesn’t offer the 701 in +18. Regardless, with the skinner tire, I’m very happy with the amount of rubber beyond the fender—a little more aggressive than your set up, but still nice.

I'll be interested to see how that 3.73 differential is off road.

Just an FYI (and my dealer may be wrong)... if you go over 10% up on tire size Ford might give you grief on any drive-line problems under warranty.

Hope it works out. It looks nice!

Just add a minimal lift and put the rubbing concerns to rest. You know you want to. Lol Nice looking ride. Enjoy.

My dream is to get some of those sweet sweet sas takeoffs. There are enough 2 doors sasquatches around the Chicagoland area that it might happen one day.

This looks great!!! I’ve been researching and researching and I may have just found what I’m after! Thanks for sharing!

I’d been considering leveling kits, 2” kits, anything and everything. I want the OBX to look a bit more aggressive but don’t want it overly large or SAS looking as we won’t be on the trails or in the mud much at all. This may just be the happy medium for me. 👍🏼

Wouldn't 10% over a 32 be a 35 not a 34?

Do you know if this setup would work on a 2 door base non sas 2.7l (3.73 gears)? Not sure if there are any suspension differences between the base and the Outer Banks. It looks amazing!

I believe we share the same suspension but I'd double check the suspension cookbook thread before buying

Great post and amazing looking Bronco!

I expect team sasquatch to jump in and say your drive line is going to explode because you didn't buy a 6 grand package for bigger tires.

Loved that you called out the KO2. Let's be honest, it's an 8 year old tire design that gets vehemently defended in 2023 despite other newer, great performing tires being readily available in more sizes and load ranges.

I’ve been using KO2s for the past 5 or so years so they are my frame of reference, but have been reading about the Toyos, Nittos, Falkens that a lot of folks here seem to like.

I’m interested in something that would perform better in mud/dirt, but not be louder on pavement (so not a full blown MT) or worse in snow or wet conditions. I’m also partial to the softer sidewall/ride of load range C… any suggestions?

If you haven’t already, I would look at hybrid tires like Ridge Grapplers or the Wildpeak R/T
