People probably take Priuses to those trails, so yes, you’ll be fine with 35/20s. Def don’t need a 4“ lift to fit them, either (35s can fit stock, or with a minor leveling kit). Just do what you like. Most people who do hardcore off-roading are going to prefer more sidewall, but you won’t have any problems.

While 20's on an off-road vehicle is not my thing, it is also not my money either. So to answer your question, yes 35's on 20" wheels will work fine for what you described. As mentioned, a 4" lift is not needed either and a 2" lift should help clear the tires easily

While the 18" route is better you will have limited choices in proper offset (between +55 and 00) as well as fewer tires to choose from.

You'd have to be a little nutty to go where I did that, I don't think OP has any intention of it! I also trashed all my wheels and I don't sense he wants that risk either.

Perfect time to swap on some 20”s or even 24”s…bonus points for spinners!

Once you off-road once, you will want to repeat that action. 17 or 18 inch is a safe size to lightly off-road and cruise on the streets. But, this is your rig and you should have fun with whatever choice you make.

WTH is the story with those things? I was in TX a few months back saw some cars with them and I'm thinking, those are the dumbest looking wheels and seem dangerous as hell

Those are “elbows” and it’s a cultural thing, there’s a very specific group of people who run these, and they aren’t the lifted truck off roader types😂

They call them elbows and vogues around here, not sure when it all started but there it is.
