Aux Switch area iPad mini mounting

I just purchased an iPad mini in hopes of mounting it on the console the Aux switches are in. I placed it up there and it will fit the way I want it to. Now my question is simple.

How can I pop it apart to mount a 1 inch ball. I was going to bolt it though the plastic with a backing plate to strengthen it.

Will this hold an iPad mini? I was also going to power it off the rear view mirror power.
