Was working on replacing pads and rotors when I realized I forgot about “brake maintenance mode”. I made the mistake of trying to enable that while the caliper was off the rotor and now leaked brake fluid and piston is fully extended.

I’ve since disconnected the electrical at the piston since the Bronco decided to keep trying to engage and drained more fluid.

Can I get this retracted while maintenance mode is still off?

Any bleeding tips for the Bronco?

Any help is appreciated.

Edit: didn’t mean to post in Raptor forum. This is a badlands 2.7L.

You should be able to just push the piston back in, as long as nothing is damaged.

If for some reason it won’t go back in, you may need to remove the parking brake motor from the caliper.

You’re probably going to need to bleed the brakes now though. Hopefully you didn’t damage the piston seal.

Push piston back in without fluid coming out? Pushes a lot of fluid back out when trying to depress the piston.

I might have engaged the parking brake while trying to enable maintenance mode the first time. Assuming this won’t go back in without disabling the brake? But I dont think I can disable the brake now since maintenance mode was never fully enabled. Any harm in trying to enable the maintenance mode again so long as I’m not accidentally engaging the parking brake?

Where is the fluid coming out? From around the piston? I mean fluid coming out really doesn’t matter at this point. You have to get the piston back in lol

Crack the bleeder so it comes out there instead of around the piston maybe?

If it won’t go back in because you enabled the parking brake, then you’ll have to remove the motor from the caliper.

I would not try to enable or disable the parking brake or maintenance mode anymore at this point.

I am not familiar with the brakes on these but look at the piston on the piston an make sure it's plain before pushing it back in. If there are holes for a tool they have to be screwed back in.

I ended up pulling the entire caliper off. The piston was not locking in with this piece underneath. Now that everything’s out I can actually see how it fits together.

Any idea on how to get these back inside the rubber boot?

I could be wrong but if that rubber boot has separated from the caliper, I believe it’s time for a full replacement.

At this point it would be the easiest route, and considered a painful lesson.

With enough determination and proper tools it could probably be torn the rest of the way down and reassembled, but I'd bet the seal will be damaged during removal, and I don't know if that is readily available to anyone but the factory or rebuilders. I mean it was put together once...

If I have to replace it all, so be it. I had some hope though because I’ve seen some videos of other caliper rebuilds though where that boot pops out and can be re-seated. I didn’t know if this one came out easily. I have not tried too hard to remove it yet for fear of tearing the boot.

At the very least, yes lesson learned, but I also now intimately understand the workings on this caliper. Curiosity satisfied at quite the cost

Seen some videos of people using air to manipulate the seal and push the Piston back in. Could be worth a try, but not sure in this case.

I can get a new caliper through a local dealer delivered tomorrow. Think I will just do that.

Appreciate the replies. Kicking myself for forgetting about and trying later the brake maintenance mode. Costly mistake but will never happen again.
