is there any reason why people don't use the spare tire carrier?
I wouldn’t want to put any extra weight on the factory tailgate hinges. It’s already approaching 100lbs with the spare. But you can get a tailgate reinforcement which is a couple hundred bucks.
I have a harbor freight hitch extension- it’s the same as the Ford one, but like $30. I also drilled it so it sits more flush.
To me, a hitch mounted bike rack is the right tool for the job.

One last question - is there any reason why people don't use the spare tire carrier? I'm just thinking I'll only have 1 bike max, so weight shouldn't be an issue, and it seems easier to take off and store if need be. Also........quite a bit cheaper since I'll have to buy a hitch, hitch extender, and the 1UP or Kuat.
Tire style carriers typically secure your bike by hanging it. If you have a carbon frame or care about keeping the paint in good shape I’d personally shy away from them.

Please post more hitch setups if you've got them. Looking for something very tidy when folded up and need the right combination of both rack and extender.
