I have never seen it like that. Did you have too drive out in mud?

No. It was just perfect lighting with the sun going down and lighting up the rock formations, but not the clouds to the east. We had just a brief light shower. Most of the rain was to the east towards the Island in the Sky area. So no mud for us on this trip. Note the main area of concern when it rains or snows, is the Flint Trail.

That is for sure. There is another flat area beyond the Flint Trail that gets washed out and can get muddy. One time when it was dry my rear tire slipped into a deep wash at the side of the trail there. I just kept my foot on the accelerator and drove sideways for a while until the tire got enough traction to pull out. I warned the people behind me and they got through OK.

Great photo!

This might help anyone who is planning a Maze trip. Last September, I spent 10 nights in the Maze followed with two nights in Poison Springs. Here is my trip log, which started at the dirt 3 or 4 miles south of Green River and ended at the pavement 17 miles south of Hanksville. So the trip log covers the entire time on dirt averaging 10.7 MPG (2.7L 4D Sasquatch).

10 days is legit, well done. Thanks for the specs. Poison Springs Canyon is awesome, we did it years ago with my old 2ng Gen Tacoma & two 4Runners. It’s a great route into the Maze, the beginning looks like a canyon on Mars.

A week or so ago I bumped into one of my buddies who was part of our last trip to the Doll House. I told him I was headed back in Oct. He smiled and causally said “Revenge of the Doll House, huh?” Ha ha ha. Yup.

Finally finished installing a TrailRax stand alone pack Rax today. Without PDF instructions installation was challenging, mostly because the YT video is out of date. Plus that YT vid is focused on the 4D.

The Green Lady still fits in the garage, but it was very, very close! Ha ha ha. Come winter I plan to take the rack off. No way I’ll be able fit if there’s any snow on the ground.

At first I set it up for two three gallons tanks. Then I decided to test fit my four gallon tanks and got lucky, the span for the mounts fit just fine.

I’m still undecided on how much fuel I’ll bring to the Maze. If needed I can run two more three gallon tanks on the spare.

I’m headed up into the Flat Tops mid-July so that will be a good test to see how this rack behaves.

how much did that run you? I just checked the website, and 1k seems a bit steep, if I was looking at the right thing.

@crzyhawk - If memory serves, yes it was just over 1K. I agree it’s steep, but our options are limited. Hopefully this rack preforms well. If you order one just a heads up all the instructions are wrong. 😆

Wow the Maze requires reservations? Times change.
That really shocked me. The Maze was a really obscure place back in the 1970s, except to a small number of backpackers and probably local wheelers. Now you need reservations?!?

Never been there, but drove out to Panorama Point 35 years ago. Saw nobody except a ranger.

Yep. That’s what happens when you get old! And the internet happens in the middle of it. It’s an interesting experience being young enough to have explored/traveled in the analog world. And then to mature in the digital world. It’s all trade offs. Access and simplicity vs relying on physical guide books, paper maps and hearsay.

Especially poignant as I’m in London now with my daughter and wife, glued to our phones for directions. But I was an ex-pat kid in London and spent all of my high school years here in the early 1980s. Figuring it out. Massive freedom exploring Europe in the summers on my bike, sleeping on beaches, in farmyards. With a paper map. And an agreement that I called my parents once/week to checkin, usually from a post office phone bank. Times change! Massive connectivity is not all positive.
