Engine break-in period

Hi all-

I'm waiting on delivery and wondered about this. I've seen a few reference break-in periods and I remember someone once telling me this is unnecessary on modern engines.

I don't recall following this closely with my two previous cars, both small BMWs. Any reason to follow a break-in protocol?
