Awesome photos, the sun coming through those clouds is epic. I have the same color but it is clearly better suited for WA than socal.

Side note: holy crap what's happening to that forest. Clear cutting or just tree disease? Man we gotta band together to protect God's country or it will vanish.

Clearcutting. I think the state forest is pretty much second growth timber. The area was denuded by forest fires from 1933-51. It was then replanted, and areas with trees that are now big enough are harvested then replanted. You can see some regrowing forest in the second-to-last photo.

Yes, it's ugly. OTOH, we all use natural resources but we don't usually see the results of their extraction. That can be a rude shock. There are some forests in that part of Oregon that are off-limits to logging.

That just happens to be one of the many logging areas in the state. The trees will be replanted and the forest will grow back. It's not really that big of a deal. There are tens of millions of acres in this state of unlogged forests.

Actually the state of Oregon is the Douglas fir capital of the world. There's more trees here per acre than anywhere. The big old growth trees that were 8 to 15 ft in diameter we're all cut back in the 1800s and early 1900s. Old Growth trees are off limits on public property . The new trees that you see here in the pictures are on their third generation and our managed by large companies like Weyerhaeuser or Hampton. Both Oregon and Washington both recently voted to open up more Timberland to harvesting because for the last 50 years it has been overly regulated by birdwatchers, Tree Huggers and other environmentalists.

Trees grow FAST here!!! here's a few pictures of a 150 year old walnut tree planted by an early settlers that I wacked down. the one on the truck is ONLY the BRANCH!!!

Back in my Coast Guard days I lived in Coos Bay, Reedsport and Illwaco WA. I love the Oregon coast, and it was one of my top retirement picks. The politics and taxes have kept me away. Most of my Coast Guard friends live around the Baker City area.
