Correct, my studded Hakkapeliitta LT3's have been fantastic!

Sorry to hear, really glad no serious injuries!
Nokian makes incredible winter tires. I have their all weather WR G4 and they eat up the nastiest snow storms and ponds of water from summer storms like it’s nothing.

I didn't expect you'd be interested in learning how to be a better and safer driver, but it was worth a try!
We're all on the roads together. 🤷‍♂️

whether 4H, or 4A, whether summer or winter tires - if it is icy (and off camber) then any vehicle will slip and slide - likely the only fault was speed - then it may have landed still upright in the ditch

Glad everyone is OK.

And you were in 4A when this happened?? These conditions are what 4A are made for. That's not good. And makes me second guess even getting advance 4x4 if it doesn't even do it's job.

I keep reading posts on here how people think 4A is going to save you in an emergency. It is not and in fact if it engages in extremely slippery conditions it can upset the balance of the vehicle. This is much more sophisticated than the original Control Trac transfer case but still not AWD. 4A is not the hand of God reaching down to pluck you out of danger. For those reasons, in those conditions you should be in 4H.

And regarding some other posts in this thread, YOU ABSOLUTELY SHOULD NOT be engaging your lockers in icy conditions in on-road driving.

For the original poster, I hope you and your wife are not hurt. It looks like it was a frightening ride.

Glad you are okay. its on page 6 so I wont ask or critique your driving or modes. But I will remind others on snow and ice to use 4A or 4H but do not engage lockers unless forward momentum has become hard. A locked axle will cause a tire to slide if there is any steering input at all.

Sorry to hear. If it’s any consolation, you could probably make a small fortune selling the parts off of it.
As more of these unfortunate accidents take place.... someone, somewhere, with knowledge and ability, is going to scoop em up and start make some super cool rigs.

Silver Lining.

If you slam on the brakes on ice - its not going to matter what gear you are in....(from someone who has driven through Iowa at 5-6mph on black ice on I80)

Everything merc said is correct. It doesn't do the driver any good now, but even the driver admitted stabbing the brakes was the wrong move.

Although there may not have been a "right" move when there's ice involved it's usually too late.

Perfect!
4A isn't AWD.

First glad everyone is OK.

Second I'm interested in how the rollbar or upper area of the cab held up?
