Yesterday my son and I made a day trip to Big Bend National Park. There's no hardcore offroading in the park with the possible exception of Black Gap Road, but there are a number of unpaved and sporadically maintained dirt roads - most over 100 years old to explore. Part of our day yesterday was spent exploring Glenn Springs Road on the Eastern side of the park.
Glenn Springs was a settlement in the early 20th century with a candelilla wax camp and an army camp to protect settlers from raids by Mexican bandits. The settlement was near a flowing spring. Water is rare and precious in the desert. Not much is left of Glenn Springs other than some foundations and a corral and dipping vat from the later ranching days. There is also a small cemetary which we did not visit.
